Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Monday, October 3 | 8PM | The Loft
Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a comedic multimedia solo performance about mental illness among Asian American women. Combining monologues, movement and a host of pop culture references, Kristina Wong appropriates visual materials such as print brochures and TV advertisements dealing with mental illness, using them as comedic foils to the seriousness of the subject. Post-performance panel with Kristina Wong, Windi Sasaki (Associate Director of Asian Pacific Islander Middle Eastern Desi American Programs and Services – APIMEDA), and Dr. Louie Limas (Counseling and Psychological Services – CAPS).

Fémina
Friday, October 7 | 8PM | Mandeville Auditorium
Lyrically poignant with hip-hop and Latin folk major influences, Fémina is Argentine soul music with a purpose. The harmony-soaked vocals and electro-folk charisma of the Trucco sisters propels a new project by this acclaimed female powered band and carries messages of equality and empowerment.

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
Friday, October 14 | 8PM | Dept. of Music’s Conrad Prebys Concert Hall
The “luminous, often breathtaking” (Washington Post) Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble returns to ArtPower with an evening program that includes Purcell (arr. Britten): Chacony in G Minor; Brahms: Sextet in B-flat Major, Op. 18; Enesco: Octet for Strings
World Premiere

Lei Liang with Mivos Quartet
Saturday, October 15, at 8PM | Dept. of Music’s Conrad Prebys Experimental Theater
On October 15, award-winning composer Lei Liang unveils a new composition evoking cracking ice and whale calls in the Arctic at UC San Diego’s Prebys Experimental Theater. Six Seasons represents the culmination of a years-long collaboration between Liang, the inaugural Research Artist in Residence at the Qualcomm Institute and a professor with the UC San Diego Department of Music, and oceanographers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Marquis Hill: New Gospel Revisited
Tuesday, October 25, at 8PM | The Loft
One of the finest trumpeters in jazz today, Marquis Hill is also a composer and bandleader whose comprehensive vision highlights the unity and continuity within the musical heritage of African Americans. At ArtPower, he performs from his latest album, a live reinterpretation of his 2012 debut album New Gospel.

Las Cafeteras: Hasta La Muerte with Special Guest: Lupita Infante
Thursday, October 27, at 8PM | Epstein Family Amphitheater
Hasta La Muerte is an enthralling new production rooted in the indigenous Mexican practice of celebrating Life and Death, universally known as Día de los Muertos. Honoring the ancestors who came before us, Hasta La Muerte is a passionate, multi-dimensional performance filled with Zapateado, dance, song, altares y flores, and featuring original and new music from Las Cafeteras. With traditional altar on stage alongside the mesmerizing beauty of Folklorico choreography, Hasta La Muerte show is a night of transcendent color and sound, a moving invitation to travel through time, rhythm, and memory.
