Did you know…?
The term burlesque, dating back to the 17th Century, is derived from the Italian word ‘burlesco’, which comes from ‘burla’ meaning a joke or mockery. Early burlesque began as shows in which actors/dancers would recreate well-known culture such as operas or Shakespeare as parodies.
Victorian burlesque – popular in London during the 19th century – was brought to New York by the mid-1800’s. This style transformed into shows performed by all female casts where women wore risqué tights, considered scandalous for the time period. The shows became a quick hit, as they showed under-dressed, attractive women mimicking patriarchs’ roles. Through the 20th century, burlesque gradually transformed into striptease with costumes that became more and more elaborate.
Burlesque shows found their way to Bourbon Street in the 1940’s, and performances continued to get more creative and risqué throughout the 60’s. Louisiana Purchase is paying homage to the culture and history to the burlesque by hosting two of their own on the night of August 30th.
