Did you know…?
The term burlesque, dating back to the 17th Century, is derived from the Italian word ‘burlesco’, which comes from ‘burla’ meaning a joke or mockery. Early burlesque began as shows in which actors/dancers would recreate well-known culture such as operas or Shakespeare as parodies.
Victorian burlesque – popular in London during the 19th century – was brought to New York by the mid-1800’s. This style transformed into shows performed by all female casts where women wore risqué tights, considered scandalous for the time period. The shows became a quick hit, as they showed under-dressed, attractive women mimicking patriarchs’ roles. Through the 20th century, burlesque gradually transformed into striptease with costumes that became more and more elaborate.
Burlesque shows found their way to Bourbon Street in the 1940’s, and performances continued to get more creative and risqué throughout the 60’s. Louisiana Purchase is paying homage to the culture and history to the burlesque by hosting two of their own on the night of August 30th.
Louisiana Purchase will open doors at 5 p.m. for the game and stay open once the sun goes down for their industry burlesque night. Specialty priced drinks will be offered throughout the evening and Chef Q will dish out buy-one-get-one steaks.
The three burlesque shows are at 8:30 p.m., 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Space is limited, so reserve your spot by visiting Open Table.
Come early to catch the game, grab some food and stay for a sultry show!
See you there!
