Bring all your friends and family to ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station this month to make it a November to remember. Whether you choose to browse veteran art in the former Naval Training Center, contort your mind at the Art in Flexion Mysterie premiere, discover your green thumb, check out some new public art, or take part in a variety of First Friday experiences, ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station welcomes everyone to make lasting memories.
UPLIFTING GESTURES MULTIMEDIA ART INSTALLATION BY LESLIE PIERCE | November 1-30
For the month of November, gaze upon the extraordinary multimedia art installation, UPLIFTING GESTURES, by artist Leslie Pierce located in the Dick Laub NTC Command Center’s Suite 104. The free monthlong installation will feature multimedia art such as video projections, drawings and paintings as well as participants’ drawings from the UPLIFTING GESTURES Outdoor Public Event.
The exhibit was made possible through a Collaborative Grant awarded by NTC Foundation and will run for the entire month of November. The exhibit will be open Tuesdays-Thursdays from 12PM-6PM, Fridays from 11AM-2PM, and Saturdays-Sundays from 11AM-6PM.
FIRST FRIDAY at ARTS DISTRICT | November 4
Wander and observe all there is to offer in the ARTS DISTRICT with various art exhibitions, workshops and more for this month’s First Friday. You can view the entire lineup of events here with a few highlights listed below.
Milk Oolong Studio
Milk Oolong Studio is hosting a two-hour “Moon Jar Workshop” from 4PM-6PM. Attendees will choose between blue, white, or clear glaze and the finished piece will be ready for pick up in approximately 2 weeks. The workshop is $65, and to sign up click here.
Mandell Weiss Gallery
Mandell Weiss Gallery introduces its inaugural exhibit, Portraits from the Anthropocene Part I: Body, Energy, Space, Time. This exhibition represents the fundamental aesthetics of dance, along with exploring the inextricable and conflicting relationship between the human body and the gravity of our footprint on the environment. This exhibit questions what it means to be a practicing artist in this time of global existential crisis.
Featured artists include Ellen Dieter, Shahla Dorfshan, Ajay Junious, Linda Litteral, Kathleen Kane Murrell, Kathy Nida, Katie Ruiz, and Perry Vasquez. Attendance is free and will be open from 5PM-8PM.
FALL REPERTORY CONCERT| November 4-6
San Diego Dance Theater presents “Up Close & Personal”, a collection of world premieres, repertory, and a photographic art installation. Director Terry Wilson and Guest Artist Bernard Brown have created two world premiere dances along with a repertory created by former Artistic Director Jean Isaacs and Guest Artists Lavina Rich, Khamla Somphanh, and Odessa Uno.
Attendees will also enjoy a photography installation by Doug McMinimy, one of San Diego’s premier dance photographers, which converts Khamla Somphanh’s dance, Purposely Accidental from a sequence of movements in space and time into a series of still photographs.
The dance performance and photography installation will be held at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station’s Light Box Theater (2590 Truxtun Rd. Suite 205). Tickets are available for purchase online here.
FLEET WEEK MILITARY & VETERANS ART EXHIBIT | November 4-13
There is no better place to enjoy the artistic works of those that have served our country than in the former Naval Training Center in San Diego. Browse local art created by active and retired military personnel at the Veterans Art Exhibit presented by Fleet Week San Diego in partnership with ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with all mediums of art at the Martha Pace Swift Gallery running from November 4-13. The exhibit will be open from 9AM-9PM.
ART IN FLEXION PRESENTS “MYSTERIE” AT THE LOT | November 10
Engross yourself in the tantalizing cinematic journey, Mysterie, presented by Art in Flexion at The LOT this November. Looking through the eyes of circus professionals, Mysterie will reimagine the world from a contorted perspective. This film will be the first of Art in Flexion’s big screen productions to hit movie theatres. The two-hour film will premiere at The LOT on Thursday, November 10 at 6PM.

MONTHLY GARDEN CLUB | November 11
San Diego Craft Collective invites the community to join their garden club on the second Friday of every month. Founder, Steffanie Dotson, saw an opportunity to transform an underutilized plot of land outside their studio into a living, learning lab!
Through the support of a Collaborative Grant by NTC Foundation, the new Edible & Pollinator Garden serves to teach the community about how gardening in a small space can be quite abundant. Learn how to grow your own organic fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables, plus all the benefits of eating healthy, being outdoors and giving back green space to our planet. Participation is $10 and free for military.

RADY CHILDREN’S ICE RINK | November 17
NTC Foundation welcomes Rady Children’s Hospital to celebrate the holiday season with the return of their outdoor ice skating rink beginning Thursday, November 17, through January 8, 2023. Located in the Central Promenade at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station, Rady Children’s Ice Rink is in its 26th year and is a fun, family-friendly way to spend time together, raising funds for the Thriving After Cancer program at the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
The Ice Rink is a hub for joy and inspiration throughout the holiday and will be open Monday thru Sunday from 10AM–10PM, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
BIRDS IN MOTION | November 20
Birds in Motion is a first time two-day collaboration between San Diego Dance Theater and Mockingbird Improv. This innovative all-day improv event will consist of a two-hour improv workshop, led by San Diego Dance Theater and Mockingbird Improv faculty. Actors and dancers are welcome to come and explore different interactions with improv!
During this workshop, faculty will lead students through improv games and structured scores. Following the workshop, Mockingbird and San Diego Dance Theater will close the night by presenting a collaborative performance featuring their professional companies! Students will be able to watch elements of their workshop on stage, and audience members will be able to experience two art forms come to life!
The workshop and performance will be held at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station’s Light Box Theater (2590 Truxtun Rd. Suite 205). Tickets are $25 for the workshop and $15 for the performance and can be purchased
LPA DESIGN STUDIOS | Opening This Month
Welcome the newest addition to the ARTS DISTRICT, LPA Design Studios, an integrated design firm focused on a design process that emphasizes performance, collaboration and inclusion. Their work earned the AIA-California 2021 Firm Award, the state’s highest honor for an architecture firm. LPA shares an innovative outlook and changes lives by design. LPA officially opened its doors on October 19 at its new studio space in Barracks 3.
