Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero Expands To 7 Nights A Week And Rolls Out Its Lineup Through July 4

Special Events

A popular staple of Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero’s offerings are its unique special events, and a number are planned for the coming months, including:

The magic of all things “Mom”

This Mother’s Day (May 8), RCC Embarcadero will celebrate the magic of all things “Mom” on their special day with screenings of the hilarious remake of the body-swapping classic Freaky Friday and the irresistible, toe-tapping smash-hit ABBA musical sequel Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

Your all-time favorite time-travel movies

With the opening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, RCC is looking back on some all-time favorite time-travel movies and giving its guests, the people, the choice of which time-bending cinematic epic to celebrate! RCC fans can vote for the time travel movie they’d like to see at the Rooftop on Thursday, May 12. Voting is available here. Polls close May 2 and the winning film will be announced May 3.

Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th hits the RCC screen ON Friday the 13th (May 13), where guests can catch the first installment of the iconic slasher series on the Rooftop Cinema Club big screen under the stars.

Annie | Special Anniversary

Forty years ago, the World learned that “the sun’ll come out tomorrow” as little orphan Annie made her way from Broadway to the big screen and into the hearts of millions of moviegoers everywhere. Enjoy all the fun, music, and laughs with this special anniversary screening of Annie at RCC Embarcadero on Saturday, May 21.

Everything Tom Cruise

With the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, Rooftop Cinema Club thought it would be the perfect time to celebrate some of the most iconic movies from one of the last bona fide movie stars: Mr. Tom Cruise! They’ll spend an entire weekend (May 21-22) in “Cruise Control” as RCC showcases his musical side in Rock of Ages, the action hit Edge of Tomorrow, the impossibly ’80s bartending drama Cocktail, and the film that solidified him as an A-lister, Risky Business.

The prom season

Proms and movies about high school go together like…well proms and high school. So, for a weekend this May 27-29, RCC is showcasing a cinematic Prom Season complete with ’90s classics like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, and Never Been Kissed, along with a fun mix of other prom movie staples, including Back to the Future, Footloose, 21 Jump Street and more.

LGBTQIA+ Hits

For Pride Month, Rooftop Cinema Club is showing multiple LGBTQIA+ hits throughout June! They’ll have everything from the hilarious and outrageous The Birdcage to the glamourous and moving biopic Rocketman. Pride Month will also feature the ultimate horror comedy musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and a celebration of Judy Garland in her iconic role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

Celebrating Prince

In honor of Prince’s birthday, Rooftop Cinema Club is celebrating one of history’s greatest musicians with a special screening of his Academy Award winning hit musical film, Purple Rain, on June 12. Made when Prince was on the cusp of achieving superstardom, the film pays tribute to the things he loves most: music and his home state of Minnesota. And for Tupac Shakur’s birthday, RCC is screening his iconic romantic collaboration with Janet Jackson, Poetic Justice, on June 16. A beautiful and moving story that showcased Tupac’s dramatic abilities in a way that had not been seen before, it allowed audiences to be impressed with yet another aspect of the performer’s deep
talent.

Juneteenth

This Juneteenth (June 19), Rooftop Cinema Club is celebrating the first Black Disney princess with a screening of The Princess and the Frog, and showcasing Black filmmakers and actors with screenings of writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s deeply romantic Love & Basketball and writer/director Jordan Peele’s horror triumph Get Out.

4th of July

Celebrate the birth of America and the joy of summertime with Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero this 4th of July weekend! “We will not go quietly into the night” with screenings of the ultimate ’90s action blockbuster Independence Day, the ode to America’s favorite pastime, The Sandlot, and pure hits of Americana nostalgia like Forrest Gump, The Notebook and more!

A night with furry friends

Dog-friendly “Wooftop” screenings on May 14 (The Princess Bride), May 29 (The Sandlot), June 12 (The Goonies) and June 25 (Legally Blonde) are aplenty in May and June. Guests are invited to bring their furry friends along to enjoy a night out at the Rooftop. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs and the dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. A special relief area will be provided at the venue.

Sing your heart out

Sing-Along films featuring Grease (May 15 and June 14) and The Greatest Showman (May 17 and June 30).

Open Caption screenings

And open-caption screenings for hearing impairment accessibility on May 15 (The Great Gatsby), June 11 (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and June 26 (Bridesmaids).

See you there, San Diego!
