Spend Halloween Night With the Yokai at Japanese Friendship Garden

Halloween in San Diego usually means a costume party in someone’s living room or a crowded bar downtown. The Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum has a different plan. For one night, the grounds belong to the spirits.

The Shape-Shifters Behind the Costumes

Yokai are the tricksters, shape-shifters, and strange creatures that fill Japanese folklore. They’re the ones who turn up in old stories to unsettle travelers and play tricks on anyone paying too little attention.

They’re also the theme, the dress code, and the reason to put real effort into your costume. Come dressed for it. This is the crowd that will commit.

Fire at 8 PM, and a Parade That Takes the Grounds

Set a reminder for 8 PM. That’s when Haus of Dragon runs a fire performance, the one fixed time on the whole schedule.

The yokai parade is the other centerpiece, a procession that moves through the garden as the spirits take over the night. Dancing DJ Productions runs music the rest of the evening, so the dance floor is there whenever you want it.

Tarot Readings, Flash Tattoos, and a Dessert Bar

There’s plenty to wander into between the bigger moments. Tarot readers will tell you what the spirits have in store. Flash tattoo artists work from a limited run of designs, so you can leave marked by the night.

Carnival games are set up for anyone who wants to test their luck. The dessert bar handles the sweets, the cash bar pours craft cocktails, and local merch vendors are on site if you want to take something home.

The Galleries Stay Open After Dark

The museum opens for after-hours viewing, which is the quieter half of the night. Walking the exhibits with the garden dark outside is a different experience than an afternoon visit, and it’s the part of the evening most people will not think to plan for.

See you there!

One night, one garden, and every yokai in the folklore. Come in costume, stay for the fire performance, and let the tarot reader handle the rest.
