Your Guide To This Week’s North County Concerts

This week is full of homegrown Indie music. From dream rock to space folk, country folk to Americana bluegrass, there’s a little bit of everything in North County’s independent music scene.

Imagery Machine and Tacky Little Hatshop – 3/3

Aztec Brewing Company

Vista

Dream-rock band Imagery Machine’s debut EP has been nominated for San Diego Music Awards Best Indie/Alternative Album 2017. If that isn’t enough to get you interested, just take a listen to the act’s energetic lead vocals, half-shouted half-sung by Jennie Lynn.

Meanwhile, Tacky Little Hatshop plays space folk described as “Feist meets Tom Waits.” Check out the group’s EP Where Whales Go to Die.

CALICO the Band – 3/3

Brick 15

Del Mar

CALICO (all caps, please) is shorthand for California country—CALICO delivers exactly what it promises.

California natives Manda Mosher and Kirsten Proffit, leaders and dual frontwomen, harmonize like a female version of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

CALICO’s 2017 Under Blue Skies reflects CSNY’s sensibilities and brings a twang that’s pure CALICO. Celebrate the album’s release at Brick 15.

Railroad Earth – 3/3

The Belly Up

Solana Beach

Railroad Earth isn’t concerned about the type of music they play—they just play it. But with a line-up that contains banjos, bouzoukis, mandolins and violins, defining Railroad Earth as bluegrass or Americana wouldn’t be a stretch.

The group’s name comes from a Jack Kerouac short story which might give you an idea of the band’s sensibilities: the oxymoronic everyman counterculture.

The Tighten Ups – 3/4

The Pour House

Oceanside

San Diego’s “most dangerous” rock ‘n’ soul band hits this Oceanside venue to add some danger to your Saturday night.

Since 2007, the group has been moving around the San Diego area, providing rock ‘n’ roll with a brass section. Frontwoman Laura Jane lends her throaty and texturized mark to every tune.

Shane Alexander – 3/4

Brick 15

Del Mar

Alexander was born in San Diego, raised on the East coast and now returns to the city of his birth to play his stirring singer-songwriter songs.

2016 saw the release of Alexander’s 6th studio album Bliss. Emmy-winner Larry Carpenter’s new musical The Freedom Machine features songs written by Shane Alexander, taking him from pure aural to sound and vision.

Trouble in the Wind – 3/5 and Every Sunday of March

The Pour House

Oceanside

Time and time again, critically-acclaimed Trouble in the Wind appears on SoundDiego’s “best of” and “should be signed” lists.

Here’s your chance to experience the talent live. March is Trouble’s month of residency at The Pour House. Vowing to never play the same song twice, Trouble in the Wind won’t have a problem with that promise—every song in the band’s extensive catalog is a winner.
