La Jolla Symphony and Chorus is Bringing a Truly Unique Concert Experience to UC San Diego

La Jolla Symphony and Chorus is presenting The Heavenly Life, a concert series conducted by Sameer Patel that brings together contemporary composers, a Mahler masterpiece, a celebrated film vocalist, and young performers from the San Diego Youth Symphony.
A Program That Covers a Lot of Beautiful Ground
The evening opens with Afilador by composer Andrea Casarrubios, performed alongside members of the San Diego Youth Symphony. Casarrubios was first introduced to La Jolla audiences in the 2023-2024 season, and having young local musicians share the stage for this one makes it a genuinely special moment.
From there, the program moves into Osvaldo Golijov’s Night of the Flying Horses – a piece known for its haunting, transporting quality – before concluding with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.
If you’ve never heard it before, it’s a work that takes you on a journey through a child’s vision of paradise, and one of the great symphonist’s most beloved compositions.
A Guest Soloist You’ve Probably Already Heard
Soprano Andrea Zomorodian returns to the LJS&C stage as guest soloist. She’s based in Los Angeles where she works as a studio vocalist for film and television, and her voice has appeared in everything from The Simpsons and Frozen II to The Gilded Age. Hearing her perform live in this kind of setting is a genuinely rare opportunity.
There are two performances to choose from – an evening show and a Sunday matinee – making it easy to work into your weekend plans.
