Downtown At Sundown Continues This January

Visual and performing arts converge at MCASD’s after-hours offering, Downtown at Sundown. On the third Thursday of every month, enjoy free Museum admission and exhibition tours, DJ-spun tunes, free entry at SDSU Downtown Gallery, drink specials at the adjacent Stone Brewing Company Store, and so much more.

Downtown At Sundown Continues This January

January’s Downtown at Sundown will feature An Outside Perspective talk at 6 PM with Dr. Marty Ralph, Researcher of Climate, Atmospheric Sciences, and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Dr. Ralph will discuss the physical processes that create extremes in precipitation, ranging from floods to drought. A primary topic of his research has been atmospheric rivers and their role in mid-latitude precipitation as a way to harness water. MCASD is pleased to present a series of talks featuring distinguished scientists who will discuss issues related to climate change in conjunction with the exhibition Oscar Romo: Recovered Stream.

Tour exhibitions Nancy Lupo: Scripts for the Pageant, México quiero conocerte: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and Bound to the Earth: Art, Materiality, and the Natural World with MCASD Gallery Educators at 5:30 and 6:45 PM.

For her first solo museum exhibition, Los Angeles-based artist, Nancy Lupo, stages a conversation between the architecture of MCASD Downtown’s Farrell Gallery and a new sculpture, drawing attention to our presence among everyday objects, materials, and spaces that are often overlooked, but that deeply affect our understanding of the world. Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, Bound to the Earth addresses and reframes the landscape in relationship to broader social and cultural contexts. México quiero conocerte: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Manuel Álvarez Bravo explores the intimate connection each photographer had to capturing aspects and ideas of Mexico.

Stop by the SDSU Downtown Gallery for a collaborative art activity led by the Prison Arts Collective (PAC) from 6:15 to 7:15 PM. Participants will be guided by Teaching Artists to create a Healing Quilt, offering opportunities for self-reflection and connection.

Hungry for more? Enjoy happy hour specials next door at the Stone Brewing Company Store or dine at our neighborhood restaurant partner, AAHARN by Koon Thai.

Grab your friends and head downtown to explore all the Core Columbia neighborhood has to offer!

See you there!
