Pickleball Tournament Raises Funds to Fight Education Inequities in San Diego
The Equitable Schools Fund is hosting a community pickleball event in Carlsbad to address something the San Diego Union-Tribune has been shining a light on: San Diego’s school funding system is broken, and the gap between what schools have access to is pretty jarring.
While some communities are asked to donate over $750 per student annually to their neighborhood schools, schools in Southeast San Diego are struggling to cover basics like hygiene products and teacher appreciation programs without any private funding support.
This tournament is about raising awareness and doing something about it.
The Resource Gap Is Real
The divide between schools in different parts of San Diego isn’t subtle. Families in some communities can afford to supplement their local schools with significant private donations, while schools elsewhere are working without that safety net.
Julia Dorfman, a member of the Equitable Schools Fund Team, put it well: “When we invest in the Equitable Schools Fund, we’re not just making a donation. We’re joining a movement of hundreds of neighbors saying the system is broken, and we have the power to change it.”
Everyone’s Welcome – Players and Spectators
The event is open to everyone, whether you’re a seasoned pickleball player, trying it for the first time, or just coming to watch and support. There will be clinics led by San Diego-based professional pickleball coaches, open play, food and beverages, unique experiences, prizes, and giveaways.
You’ll also get to watch professional coaches compete in a match during the event, which is worth checking out even if you’re not playing yourself.
Using Pickleball’s Popularity for Good
The Equitable Schools Fund is partnering with Rally House Pickleball Club in Carlsbad, Main Court, and the San Diego Mojo to make this happen.
It’s one of those collaborations where sports, community, and social impact come together – using pickleball’s growing popularity to raise funds and awareness for something that genuinely matters.
Joining a Movement of Neighbors
This isn’t just about writing a check – it’s about joining a movement of neighbors who recognize the inequity and want to change it.
The fact that students in different parts of San Diego have such wildly different access to resources based purely on where they live is unacceptable, and events like this help bridge that gap while pushing for systemic change.
