A Century-Old Tradition Returns: Grape Day Festival Is Back in Escondido

Every now and then, we get the chance to step into a piece of living history, and Escondido’s Grape Day Festival is exactly that kind of experience.

This isn’t some newly invented event trying to create nostalgia—it’s the real deal, dating back to 1908 when thousands traveled from across Southern California to celebrate the region’s thriving agriculture.

What Makes This Festival Special

There’s something genuinely charming about an event that has survived over a century and still manages to feel relevant.

The Grape Day Festival captures that sweet spot between honoring the past and creating new memories. Set in Grape Day Park, just steps from City Hall and the California Center for the Arts, the festival brings together everything that makes community events memorable.

The grape stomping experience alone is worth the trip—where else can we kick off our shoes and stomp grapes the old-fashioned way while surrounded by families doing the same thing their great-grandparents might have done decades ago?

It’s messy, it’s fun, and it’s exactly the kind of activity that makes us forget about our phones for a while.

Something for Everyone

The festival organizers have done an impressive job creating activities that span generations. Kids can lose themselves in the petting zoo, face painting, and balloon animals, while adults can appreciate the historic demonstrations of bobbin lace, corn shelling, spinning, and weaving.

The cow milking demo from Hollandia Dairy adds that authentic farm-to-festival touch that you don’t find at many urban events.

Live music keeps the energy up throughout the day with country, mariachi, and local acts, while the wine and beer garden gives adults a shaded spot to sample local beverages. The food lineup promises crowd-pleasers like BBQ and tacos.

Community Connection

Beyond the activities and entertainment, this festival serves as a showcase for local organizations, Native American groups, and first responders. It’s a reminder that the best community events aren’t just about having fun—they’re about understanding who we are and where we come from.

See you there!

Some traditions are worth keeping alive, especially when they involve grape stomping. We’ll see you there with purple feet.
