Escapes: A Guide to a Perfect Winter Getaway to Park City

When the snow starts to fall, few places can match the magic of Park City, Utah. With its world-class skiing, charming Main Street, and luxurious accommodations, it’s a winter wonderland perfect for San Diegans looking to trade sandy beaches for snowy peaks—if only for a little while.

Whether you’re craving adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, here’s your ultimate guide to planning the perfect winter getaway to Park City.

How to Get To Park City

Getting to Park City is much easier than you might think, which makes it a go-to option for those of us who don’t want to make the six-hour drive to Mammoth.

Direct flights from San Diego to Salt Lake City International Airport take just under two hours, and from there, it’s a scenic 40-minute drive to Park City. Unlike many other ski areas, you don’t have to make it over a steep mountain pass to get to Park City, so you can generally count on an easy drive from the airport.

For a stress-free experience, consider shuttle services or private car hires to whisk you to the slopes. If you’re up for a road trip, the drive from San Diego takes about 10 hours, offering stunning views through the Mojave Desert and southern Utah.

Pro tip: A couple of airlines offer flights around 6 AM, allowing you to be on the mountain skiing by noon. If you’re driving, make sure your vehicle is equipped for snowy conditions.

Park City Hotels and Rentals

Park City offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every style and budget.

Luxury Resorts

For those seeking opulence, the Montage Deer Valley and St. Regis Deer Valley are unparalleled. Both offer ski-in/ski-out access, indulgent spas, and exceptional dining.

Boutique Hotels

If you’re after something charming and unique, and also very luxurious, the Washington School House Hotel is a boutique gem. With its elegant décor and intimate atmosphere, it’s perfect for a romantic escape.

Canyons Ski Resort Lodging

The newly revitalized lodging options at Canyons Ski Resort are a must-see. Recent developments have transformed the area into a modern mountain village, complete with upscale accommodations, trendy restaurants, and convenient ski-in/ski-out access.

Properties like Pendry Park City (yes, the same Pendry brand that you may be familiar with in the Gaslamp in San Diego) and Grand Summit Hotel cater to those who want to be at the heart of the action.

Vacation Rentals

Traveling with family or a group? Cozy cabins and chic condos are plentiful, offering the comforts of home with spectacular mountain views.

Many AirBNB options are available within walking distance of Main Street and the main base of Park City, making it easy to enjoy the town’s vibrant dining and shopping scene without the need for a car.

We recommend looking for something on the mountainside of Main Street, which gives you ski in, ski out possibilities, easy access to Main Street, and fast access to the mountain without any lift lines via Town Lift (a chairlift that takes you up the mountain right from the action of Main Street. It’s slow and old, but really convenient and you only need to ride it once to start the day).

What to Do in Park City

Skiing and Snowboarding

Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort are legendary for a reason. Together, they offer over 9,000 skiable acres, from groomed runs to challenging bowls, and some of the lightest, dryest powder in the world.

Canyons Ski Resort, now part of Park City Mountain, adds its own flavor with wide trails and cutting-edge facilities.

Which mountain to focus on? You’ll get a lot of strong opinions in response to that question!

We’ve been to all of them, and you really can’t go wrong. If you are a beginner, it’s best to plan your attack based on where you’re going to find the easiest access to beginner terrain and warm lodges.

Otherwise, in our opinion, the main Park City resort has so much terrain that anyone can find plenty of runs to enjoy. That being said, it’s fun to mix it up a bit, so have fun exploring!

Keep in mind that Deer Valley is for skiers only – no snowboarders allowed. So if your group includes any knuckle-draggers, you need to stick to the other mountains.

Deer Valley is also an entirely separate lift ticket from Park City + Canyons (and an expensive one!), so be sure to check the budget before you add it to your plans.

And if you’re craving some variety and don’t mind hopping in the car, there are no less than ten ski areas within an hour’s drive.

Beyond the Slopes

Not a skier? No problem. Take a serene sleigh ride, explore snowy trails on snowshoes, or try tubing at Woodward Park City. Thrill-seekers can even give fat-tire biking or snowmobiling a go.

We also recommend checking out Olympic Park, which is an active training area for our Olympic athletes. If you’re feeling up for a taste of Olympic adrenaline yourself, you can even do a bobsled experience!

Or, for something a bit lower-key, consider making the 25-minute drive to the High West Distillery for a tasting tour.

Strolling and Shopping

Main Street’s historic charm is unbeatable, with boutique shops, art galleries, and specialty stores to explore. You can easily spend days wandering up and down the hill exploring all that it has to offer.

Relaxation

After a day in the cold, indulge in a spa treatment or unwind in a hot tub overlooking the mountains. Many resorts and hotels offer wellness packages tailored to winter travelers, including some seriously luxurious spa options for those who really want to be pampered.

Where to Eat and Drink in Park City

Cozy Cafés and Breakfast

  • Harvest: We can’t say enough good things about Harvest…we literally eat there twice a day during our visits (yes, it’s an addiction!). A favorite breakfast spot known for its healthy and delicious dishes, including avocado toast and hearty bowls, paired with exceptional coffee and friendly service.
  • Atticus Coffee: A quirky, book-themed café offering great coffee, teas, and light bites—perfect for a cozy start to your day.

Dinner and Après-Ski Spots

  • High West Saloon: A ski-in whiskey distillery offering creative cocktails and hearty bites, ideal for warming up after a day on the slopes. Very popular, very crowded, but always worth the wait.
  • No Name Saloon: Famous for its laid-back vibe, juicy burgers, and craft beers. A must-visit for those looking for a casual, fun place to relax after a day of skiing.

Fine Dining

  • Riverhorse on Main: Renowned for its innovative menu featuring seasonal ingredients and an elegant dining atmosphere.
  • Handle: A modern eatery offering bold flavors and artistic presentation, perfect for a special evening out.
  • KANEO: A fresh addition to Park City’s culinary scene, KANEO blends modern elegance with a laid-back mountain vibe.

Casual Favorites

  • Baan Thai Cuisine & Bar: A hidden gem offering authentic Thai dishes like Pad Thai and Green Curry, perfect for those craving something beyond typical mountain fare.
  • Red Banjo Pizza: A family-friendly spot serving classic pizza and pasta in a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Davanza’s: A local favorite for comfort food, including pizza, tacos, burgers, and fries.

Cocktails and Nightlife

Although Utah is known for its more conservative Mormon values, which don’t exactly encourage a rowdy nightlife scene, Park City has relaxed its rules over the years to make it more tourist-friendly.

In addition to the après ski spots mentioned above, you can usually find some fun nightlife at the following:

Alpine Distilling Social Aid & Pleasure Club: A hidden gem for craft cocktail lovers, this upscale lounge serves meticulously crafted drinks featuring Alpine Distilling’s award-winning spirits. With a speakeasy-style atmosphere and a warm, welcoming vibe, it’s a perfect spot to wind down with a whiskey flight or a signature cocktail.

The Cabin: Equal parts dive bar and live music venue, The Cabin is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Expect great cocktails, a laid-back crowd, and plenty of entertainment, from DJ sets to live bands that keep the energy going all night.

Downstairs: If you’re looking for a true nightclub experience in Park City, Downstairs is as close as you’ll get. With DJ-driven dance nights, bottle service, and an intimate yet lively setting, this is where the après crowd goes when they’re not ready to call it a night.

The Spur Bar & Grill: A classic Park City hangout known for its live music, great drinks, and casual atmosphere. Grab a local craft beer or a cocktail, enjoy the fireplace, and soak in the buzzing energy of Main Street.

Flanagan’s on Main: An authentic Irish pub in the heart of Park City, Flanagan’s is the place to go for a perfectly poured Guinness, hearty pub fare, and a friendly crowd.

Special Events

Sundance Film Festival

If your visit aligns with late January, you’re in for a treat. The Sundance Film Festival transforms Park City into a hub of creative energy with screenings, events, and celebrity sightings.

Holiday Festivities

Throughout the winter season, Park City dazzles with festive light displays, holiday markets, and events like the Electric Parade.

Major Winter Events

  • World Cup Ski Races: Park City often hosts international ski competitions, drawing top athletes from around the globe. Check schedules to catch these thrilling events.
  • Deer Valley’s Freestyle International: A spectacular showcase of aerial and mogul skiing at Deer Valley Resort. Perfect for fans of high-energy winter sports.
  • Winter Concert Series: Local venues often host live music events during the winter season. From intimate acoustic performances to larger concerts, there’s something for every music lover.

Practical Tips

  • Packing: Dress in layers, and don’t forget waterproof boots, gloves, and sunscreen. Ask if the place you are staying at has a humidifier (the air in Park City is dry!); if not, consider getting one on Amazon to save your skin and sinuses.
  • Deals: Since Park City is now owned by Vail Resorts, you can expect that prices will only continue to rise. If you are going for four days or more, or bring along a family or friends, it make a lot of sense for at least one of you to invest in an Epic Pass to take advantage of the on-mountain discounts and Buddy Passes (discounted lift tickets for your friends and family).
  • Timing: Visit mid-week to enjoy fewer crowds and lower prices.
  • Transportation: If you’re staying near Main Street or the resort villages, you likely will not need a car at all during your entire stay. Consider booking a shuttle or Uber to and from the airport and walking or using Park City’s great bus system during your stay.
  • Larger Groups: If you are a group of six or more adults, and everyone needs their own bed, you’ll likely want to look at places to stay that are opposite of the mountain and/or just out of town. There you’ll find some really big vacation homes for rent that will allow you to spread out a bit. Just be sure to have a transportation solution for getting to the mountain, dinners, etc.

Day Trips and Surrounding Adventures

If you have extra time, venture beyond Park City. Nearby attractions include Salt Lake City’s Temple Square and Heber Valley, where you can ride the charming Heber Valley Railroad. Nature lovers will enjoy snowmobiling or a scenic drive to Mirror Lake Highway for breathtaking vistas.

See you there!

Park City is a winter destination that truly has it all, and it’s become one of our favorite quick getaways from San Diego. From the powdery slopes of Canyons Ski Resort to the cozy charm of Main Street, every moment here is an escape from the ordinary.

So pack your bags, embrace the snow, and create memories that will warm your heart long after the winter chill has faded.
