Ride a Piece of San Diego History at Balboa Park’s National Carousel Day

Forever Balboa Park is hosting its annual National Carousel Day this Saturday, and for anyone who has never made the trip out to see the Dorothea Laub Balboa Park Carousel, this is a good excuse to finally go. The afternoon is packed with things to do, and the whole thing is free.

National Carousel Day 2025

Over a Century of Spinning

Built in 1910 and ranked among the top 10 unique carousels in the country, the Dorothea Laub carousel has been drawing San Diego families to Balboa Park for generations.

Carousel manager Bill Brown has been there since 1972 – long enough to watch the kids who once rode it come back with their own.

What Saturday Looks Like

Kathryn the Grape will be playing live music throughout the afternoon, and there’s face painting, games, and crafts on hand to fill the time between laps.

The pacing is relaxed and the price is right – this is one of the more worthwhile ways to spend a Saturday in July. Come early, find a good spot in the park, and plan to stay a while. Some afternoons don’t need a plan.

See you there!

Free rides, live music, and over a century of San Diego history. National Carousel Day is one of the better free afternoons the summer has to offer.
