Your Guide To This Week’s North County Concerts

It’s all about folk and country in North County this week. Whether you’re a fan of classic outlaw country or like your indie-rock with a twang, there’s something for you strumming around North County—just take a look.

Taken By Canadians – 2/23

Boar Cross’N

Carlsbad

Join local favorites Taken By Canadians as they bring indie, alt-country stylings to Carlsbad Village. Mosey out to the Boar’s patio for $1 beers until the kegs are tapped.

The opener is folk-progressive rock band The Strawberry Moons, and DJ Lexicon Devil spins black gold on vinyl in between. You get the best of North County all in one spot.

Anne McCue – 2/24

Brick 15

Del Mar

Celebrate this Bluesy singer/songwriter’s sixth album Blue Sky Thinkin’ at an intimate venue. She has appeared on Time Life’s “4 Decades Of Folk Rock,” alongside Bob Dylan.

Although from Sydney, Australia, Anna McCue has lived in such places as Vietnam and East Nashville, letting different geographic regions imprint upon her music.

Shaky Feelin’  – 2/24

Aztec Brewing Company

Vista

Ever wished you could hear a mash-up of The Grateful Dead and Sublime (outside of Sublime’s “Scarlet Begonias” cover)? How about some ska with your Phish?

Shaky Feelin’ delivers the improvisation of a jam band with the energy and humor of Southern California ska. Have a brew and listen to these always-innovative riffs.

Gary Hankins and the Summer Knowledge – 2/25

The Pour House

Oceanside

This band gets its name from a poem penned by Delmore Schwartz. The indie-folk, psychedelia-infused rock of Hankins and the gang is not to be missed. Come hear what Summer Knowledge is all about, even as winter carries on.

Keeping up with the literary theme of band names, Red Pony Clock opens up the night. (Steinbeck, anyone?)

Tony Suraci (Johnny Cash’s Birthday Show) – 2/26

The Belly Up

Solana Beach

Do you have plans to celebrate outlaw country star Johnny Cash’s birthday? No? Well, The Belly Up has you covered.

Join Tony Suraci as he channels the original Highwaymen for an unforgettable performance with a 10-piece band. Talk about reincarnation—his ability to embody all four of the Highwaymen is nothing short of eerie.
