Liberty Station’s ‘Friday Night Liberty’ Event Is Jam-Packed With Entertainment
On Friday, August 4th, Liberty Station brings us another night packed full of incredible activities and entertainment.
This installment of “Art in the Garden” takes place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and you just won’t believe what all fits within that timeframe!
Seriously, if you have friends in town, need an event for the whole family, or are hoping to entertain anyone, this is the event for you.
Start your stroll through the station at the Dick Laub NTC Command Center (2640 Historic Decatur Road) and pick up a monthly program and district map.
Then enjoy watching and learning how to dance hula with Ka Lei Aloha O Hula, learn to loom with WabiSabiWeaving, get your San Diego based metalsmith wears from Thatch Jewelry, catch some summer sales at California Hardwoods, see the Monart School of Drawing student mural in Liberty Public Market, and so much more (for a more complete list of events and activities, see below).

Event Lineup
Dance and Music Performances:
San Diego Dance Theater presents new choreography by Jean Isaacs for Liv Isaacs Nollet and Emily Miller and new work created and danced SDDT company member Minaqua McPherson with JT Magee. Preview dances from the “White Box Live Jazz” series that pairs dynamic modern dance with some of the top Jazz musicians in San Diego.
Performances at 5:30 PM & 6:30 PM on the North Promenade.
Ka Lei Aloha O Hula is dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of traditional Hawaiian chants and dances from the Hawaiian Monarchy period (1795-1893). You’re invited to enjoy a performance of beautiful hulas to modern Hawaiian songs, and to participate in a fun and easy hula.
Performance from 7 – 7:30 PM on the North Promenade.
Kids Night Out at Neisha’s Dance & Music Academy. Your kids will have the time of their life making new friends in a fun, safe, supervised environment. Join Recreational Music Center as their students showcase at Open Mic Night. Stop in to hear musicians of all levels perform their latest and greatest songs on a variety of instruments including piano, guitar and drums.
Live music takes place from 5:30-7:00 PM in Studio 201.
Outdoor Exhibitors and Art Demonstrations:
WabiSabiWeaving invites visitors to come make some creations with color and texture, where we have no rules which means there are no mistakes! Together we’ll weave “Art in the Garden”. Look for us in the plaza adjacent Barracks 14.
Thatch Design Studio presents their collection made by hand in Southern California, by the all-female metalsmith team. They use repurposed, locally sourced 14k gold and sterling silver to create delicate jewelry for everyday wear. Inspired by modern lines, art & the stars in the night sky, every piece is made with love, to be loved.
Outside Barracks 15.
Women’s Museum of California offers free admission to their current exhibit Heroines in Arms: Women in the American Military. Outside the Museum see traveling exhibit “Art Rocks the Boat”, this exhibit is a historical exploration of women’s liberation and how women used their art to push at the boundaries of the possible. It is a celebration of women artists, filmmakers, and writers in the 1960s and 70s.

M Fischbeck Studio Gallery features the works of California Impressionist Peggy Fischbeck. This month celebrate her 8th anniversary by enjoying a collection of her works throughout the years and participate in the community art project in
Barracks 19.
Lauren LeVieux Artist Studio will be presenting a series of her latest work in an outdoor setting. Stop by to see what she has been doing. Perhaps one of her paintings will converse with you.

Bravo School Of Art proudly celebrates their 8 year Anniversary in ARTS DISTRICT. Enjoy instructor art demonstrations and discounts to celebrate Creativity with a Craft, Art or DIY class.

New and Visiting Exhibits:
San Diego Museum Council hosts the USS Midway Museum and will be displaying a mural painting by artist Duke Windsor which is inspired by Midway’s history, mission, and vision. The painting was recently displayed at La Bodega Art Gallery. Midway volunteers will also be on hand to answer questions about the museum.

MK Envision Galleries introduces a brand new exhibit featuring local photographer Evgeny Yorobe. A San Diego native, Evgeny has won numerous local and national awards for his stunning iconic San Diego images. Come see with your own eyes!

The San Diego Watercolor Society Gallery hosts the opening reception of “Pigment Figment”, juried by award-winning artist Richard Hawk with 95-100 original ready-to-hang paintings for sale, plus wine, food and the fellowship of other art enthusiasts.

Visions Art Museum: Contemporary Quilts + Textiles presents “Women of Mystery” by San Diego artist Charlotte Bird. This exhibit portrays cultural and mythological goddesses with aspects of their attributes and inherent powers.

Liberty Public Market Art Exhibit showcases its largest painting just finished, in true military tradition, by an army of 60 young artists ages 5-15 from Monart Drawing School. The Art Exhibit located in Liberty Public Market continues to expand, now hosting over 40 local artists and 70 new works of art each month. Curated by Arts District resident portrait artist, Nancy Tokos.

And Something Different Studio Gallery features the “Code Defied” series by Artist Leslie Pierce and now offers art classes and workshops in Encaustic, Oil and Mixed Media. Come by to sign up!

Traveling Exhibitions:
New Americans Museum hosts loan by the Arab American National Museum, photographer Jim Lommasson brings to light the life-changing decisions made by Iraqi and Syrian refugees fleeing their homeland in search of safety and a better life for themselves and their families in the United States. The objects they carried and the intense personal stories behind them combined with personal images illustrate the common threads that bind all of humanity: the love shared for family and friends and the places people call home.

New Works:
San Diego Brain Injury Foundation hosts Ryan Olson who was an artist before his motorcycle accident at the age of 19, and his creativity and passion for art was the one thing he was most grateful to regain after his injury.

Artist June Rubin presents “Cats’ Meow,” a watercolor and mixed media collection of whimsical cats.
