ArtPower To Present Diverse Programming In February

ArtPower kicks off February with seven performances ranging from chamber music to special events.

Cha Wa (American Routes)

Thur. Feb. 6, 2020 at 8 pm | Price Center East Ballroom, UC San Diego
San Diego Debut

Grammy-nominated Mardi Gras funk band, Cha Wa, takes the stage at Price Center East Ballroom. Powered by the vocals of J’Wan Boudreaux, the ensemble brings a blast of soul straight from out of New Orleans.

Alicia Olatuja (Jazz)

Fri. Feb. 7, 2020 at 8 pm | The Loft, UC San Diego

On the following night, February 7 at 8 pm at The Loft, acclaimed vocalist, composer, and arranger, Alicia Olatuja, returns to ArtPower with her new project, Intuition: Songs From The Minds Of Women, celebrating the musical contributions of women composers by reinterpreting their songs through her own lens of classic, jazzy soul. Intuition is a dazzling journey through time, tempo, genre, language, and culture from some of the most respected artists of our generation, featuring songs by Sade, Angela Bofill, Brenda Russell, Linda Creed, Imogen Heap, Tracy Chapman, Kate Bush, and others.

Doric String Quartet (Chamber Music)

Doric String Quartet performs a chamber music program that includes works by Haydn, Sibelius, and Schubert. The February 14 event takes place at The Auditorium at The Scripps Research Institute.

Deidre Bair (Special Event)

On February 20 at The Loft, National Book Award–winning biographer, Deirdre Bair, explores her 15 remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art in her new book, Parisian Lives.

Black String (Global Music)

The last week of February includes a performance by South Korea’s Black String on February 26 at Price Center East Ballroom. Creating a unique musical language that embraces traditional Korean music, American jazz, chanting, and improvisation, the ensemble captivates audiences’ senses with amplified bursts of the geomungo and Korean bamboo flutes, the fierce quake of Korean traditional percussion, and unpredictable jazz guitar melodies.

Jamison Ross (Jazz)

Thur. Feb. 27, 2020 at 8 pm | The Loft, UC San Diego

San Diego Debut

Grammy–nominated and Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz award-winning drummer, bandleader, and vocalist, Jamison Ross, anchors February on the 27th with messages of humanity through the medium of jazz. One of the hottest young names in music, singer and drummer Ross’s music shimmers between jazz, R&B, soul, gospel and blues.
