Restaurateur Brings A Taste Of His Home Country To San Diego

Born and raised in Sweden until age 16, Johan Engman has become a prominent industry figure in San Diego since making it his permanent home. Now a seasoned San Diegan, Engman lives happily with his loving wife and their little bundle of joy, and oversees nearly 20 restaurant locations under his umbrella Rise & Shine Hospitality Group.

To pay homage to his home country, Breakfast Republic will feature a traditional Swedish dish with a brunch twist, only available during the month of November! Behold the
Breakfast Plank Steak – or in Sweden, plankstek – showcasing skirt steak smothered in béarnaise sauce and served with duchess potatoes, bacon-wrapped asparagus, seared tomatoes and eggs.

For those seeking something sweet first thing in the morning, rest assured Breakfast Republic has you covered with their Almond Butter French Toast special – prepared with a vegan cinnamon batter and served with creamy almond butter, fresh bananas, raspberries and cacao nibs. An innovative take on Swedish almond baked goods, this morning delicacy is designed to pair seamlessly with coffee.

In fact, in Sweden there’s a widely practiced custom referred to as “fika,” which translates to “have coffee,” but there’s more to it than that! For Swedes, fika is a state of mind that puts emphasis on the importance of carving out time to enjoy a cup of coffee (or tea) and a bite to eat with friends and colleagues. It’s a ritual that encourages connection and refreshes the brain to be more productive. We could all use a little fika right now, so be sure to indulge in this limited-time treat while it lasts!

See you there….and stay healthy, San Diego!
