Get Creative With ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station

ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station is in the holiday spirit with brand-new ways to stay connected this month. From a transcending art installation to a virtual reality phenomenon, there is something for everyone and so much more.

VIRTUAL FIRST FRIDAY

Virtual First Friday is back on November 6! Sponsored by the Bank of Southern California; be inspired by this virtual lineup of talented local artists and creatives. Plus, for the first time, seven of this month’s activities will be hosted on one convenient virtual platform called Airmeet. So grab some local bites and sips from your favorite Liberty Station restaurants and get comfortable.

Highlights from this month’s Airmeet lineup include:

Milk Oolong is giving you an inside look at their studio. Plus learn the magic of creating pottery and watch the process of creating the perfect teacup.

Anne Gaffey Art is getting you in the holiday spirit with a live demonstration of using mixed media to create a heart painting on a 6” x 6” canvas, the perfect gift this season.

Hugo Crosthwaite will discuss the creation of his Installations at the Station mural Column A and Column B: A continual mural narrative performance. Created over the course of 16 days, this mural was a performance about the creative process and nature of art. Plus, join Hugo for a live Q & A to learn more about his process.

Hakkal Aquascape Design Gallery hosts a demonstration to create the perfect aquascape tank requiring minimal maintenance perfect for those who might be lacking the time to care for a plant or simply lack a green thumb. 4PM – 5PM.

Michelle Montjoy hosts a live talk followed by a Q and A discussing the ideas and process of creating her Installation at the Station, A Dime to Call Home. She will also be joined by artists and fabricator of the installation, William Feeney. 4:30PM – 5:30PM.

Jeremy Nuttall presents a live demonstration painting used skateboards while discussing his Installations at the Station Rolling It Forward. Representing a boat and rolling waves made entirely of community-painted skateboards, this structure was created with support and involvement of the community through public painting events. 5Pm – 6PM.

Visions Art Museum presents Quilt Visions 2020, the museum’s biennial exhibition for fall. A collection of 37 works by 14 artists, this cohesive exhibition of contemporary quilts reflects the medium’s breadth of style and depth of technique.

CIVIC ART COLLECTION – NINA MONTEJANO

Emerging artist and ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station tenant, Nina Montejano is one of several local artists selected by the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture to have artwork purchased for San Diego’s Civic Art Collection. The artworks will be purchased by the city of San Diego and installed in public places such as civic buildings, libraries, recreation centers, fire stations and more.

INSTALLATIONS AT THE STATION

Artist Josemar Gonzalez and the Aja Project unveiled Transcending Perception, the newest art installation commissioned by NTC Foundation for the Installations at the Station program, to the public this week at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station.

A collaboration with five other artists, Transcending Perception is a series of five doors each representing one of the artists from San Diego, the East Coast, Tijuana, and Kenya. The doors serve as portals for visitors to get a glimpse into their life experience. One side represents how each of their respective communities sees them and the other side represents how they see themselves.

Transcending Perception is located between The LOT and Dorothea Laub Dance Place off Truxton Rd in ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station.

15th ANNUAL ARTWALK OUTDOOR GALLERY EXHIBIT

ArtWalk @ Liberty Station returns to ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8. This year marks fifteen years of the fine arts show which brings visual arts to the historic San Diego community. A symbol of hope for the community, ArtWalk is San Diego’s first art show since March and the first approved exhibition of its kind in an outdoor space.

Taking place on the North Promenade and Legacy Plaza/Luce Court, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase artwork from more than 100 local, national and international artists who have been creating stunning pieces of work during quarantine. Tickets are available for purchase online.

Get In The Halloween Spirit With Wonderspaces VR Film Gloomy Eyes

VIRTUAL REALITY PHENOMENON

Wonderspaces is bringing virtual reality to ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station offerings visitors the opportunity to see a series of extraordinary VR films from prestigious festivals such as Sundance and SXSW. Tickets are available for purchase online with shows running through the middle of December.

Films available this month include:

Gloomy Eyes | Winner of 2019’s SXSW Virtual Cinema Jury Award which tells the story of a zombie boy in a 360-degree animated world. October 22 – November 15

BattleScar | This coming of age drama explores the theme of identity through use of animation and immersive environments in virtual reality. This film follows a year in the life of a runaway Puerto-American living in late 1970’s New York City. November 19 – December 6

Traveling While Black | Become immersed in the long history of Black Americans. Academy Award winner Roger Ross William and Emmy Award-winning Felix & Paul Studios’ transports the viewer to the historic Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington DC to share in an intimate series of moments helping to confront the way we understand and talk about race in America. December 10 – December 13
