Virtual SDMA + Art of Elan: Identities

January 22, 2021 at 7PM

Spanish multidisciplinary artist Ana de Alvear’s contemporary work shifts perceptions and perspectives in a way that’s both subtle and transformative. A search for identity pervades her multifaceted projects. Her work is explored through this engaging online video performance by Art of Elan musicians, including Executive and Artistic Director Kate Hatmaker, featuring the haunting “Spectra” for violin, viola, and cello by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. This will be the San Diego premiere of this atmospheric work, filmed safely at The San Diego Museum of Art.

Virtual SDMA + Art of Elan: Abstraction and Allegory

February 19, 2021 at 7PM

This multi-media performance video takes its inspiration from the thoughtful works of photographic art currently on display in Masters of Photography: The Garner Collection at The San Diego Museum of Art, which features iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th century to the present.

As a direct tie-in to the exhibit’s “Manipulating Reality” theme, Art of Elan takes a closer look at the power of transformation, featuring two incredibly compelling pieces of music for solo clarinet and multimedia: “Advice from a Caterpillar” for bass clarinet from the opera “Alice in Wonderland” by South Korean composer Unsuk Chin, and “Jabberwocky” by Mexican composer Andrea González. This colorful and fantastical online program, featuring internationally acclaimed clarinetist Joshua Rubin, will be the world premiere performance of González’s work, which was inspired by the Lewis Carroll poem and was created for Art of Elan as a companion piece for this special Virtual SDMA+ concert.

Stay healthy, San Diego!
