Global Music Takes Center Stage This Spring At ArtPower

Global Music Series return on April 20 with music of Illighadad from Niger by Les Filles de Illighadad (“daughters of Illighadad”). Founded in 2016 by solo guitarist, Fatou Seidi Ghali, and renowned vocalist, Alamnou Akrouni, Les Filles’ music draws from two distinct styles of regional sound, ancient village choral chants and desert guitar. The result is a groundbreaking new direction for Tuareg folk music and a sound that resonates far outside of their village.

Two musical traditions in one performance

The series travels east to Japan on April 26 with a performance by Koto visionary, Yumi Kurosawa, and renowned table player, Eric Phinney. Their program brings together two expressive musical traditions, bridging the cultures of Japan and India. They will spin mesmerizing musical tales composed by Kurosawa, as they enchant the audience and reinforce the powerful idea of music as a means to enhance the collaborative spirit of our global community.

“The Hendrix of the Sahara”

Reschedule from the fall of 2021, Vieux Farka Touré will perform on the ArtPower stage on May 4 at The Loft. Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Farka Touré’s music reflects a deep connection to and reverence for family and country and incorporates elements of rock and Latin music into the Saharan blues and traditional melodies of his native Mali.

The Global Music series takes place at The Loft at 8PM. Tickets are $20–30 and can be purchased online here. More information can be found here.
