San Diego Loyal Soccer Club To Take On German Giants Borussia Dortmund This Summer
San Diego Loyal SC will play against European opposition for the first time in club history when they take on Germany’s Borussia Dortmund in San Diego, Calif., at Snapdragon Stadium on Thursday, July 27 at 7:30PM, PT.
The unique fixture will give American fans a first-hand opportunity to see United States international Giovanni Reyna in action as well as Dortmund legend Marco Reus and Bundesliga rookie of the year Karim Adeyemi.
This is the third fixture to be announced of Dortmund’s summer 2023 USA tour with the Bundesliga runners-up taking on Manchester United in Las Vegas on July 30 and Chelsea in Chicago on August 2.
For SD Loyal, this will be an incredible chance for a club that was founded only four years ago to play against one of the most successful teams in Germany.
SD Loyal was founded in 2019 by Andrew Vassiliadis and American soccer legend Landon Donovan. The club has grown a strong following in San Diego since it was added to The USL Championship in 2020.
SD Loyal has made consecutive USL Championship playoff appearances and currently sit fourth in the Western Conference after 13 games.
Borussia Dortmund ambassador Felipe Santana traveled to San Diego to announce the match alongside Donovan, SD Loyal’s Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Borussia Dortmund to San Diego,” said SD Loyal Club President Ricardo Campos. “Our players, coaches, and fans alike can’t wait to compete against one of the elite European clubs come July.”
Event promoters TEG Sport (TEG) is proud to be bringing Borussia Dortmund to San Diego, working alongside Sports San Diego and Snapdragon Stadium.
“We are thrilled to bring a second game to San Diego at the world class Snapdragon Stadium this summer,” said TEG Global Content Director, Bart Campbell. “Football’s growth in the city over the last few years has been strong, and we’re delighted to help fuel that excitement and momentum with another European heavyweight in Borussia Dortmund coming to town and, in doing so becoming the first European team to play against San Diego Loyal.”
“The opportunity to make history was one we jumped at. We look forward to seeing the city turn out to support its team.” CEO of Sports San Diego Mark Neville echoed Campbell’s words and is eager for Dortmund to arrive this summer.
“At Sports San Diego we are so proud to have played a role in attracting yet another high-profile international soccer club to San Diego. We look forward to welcoming Dortmund and their fans to our great city for a match with our very own San Diego Loyal.”
