Your Guide To This Week’s San Diego Concerts

San Diego is getting punk rock this week. Whether you like to get political with your anarchopunk or stick to the lighter indie rock, there’s a show for you. If punk isn’t your style, you can still push boundaries with the innovative hip hop that is Cut Chemist. Choose your own adventure.

Reel Big Fish and Anti-Flag – 2/17

The House of Blues

Downtown

Reel Big Fish is playing Turn the Radio Off in its entirety on a celebratory 20th year anniversary tour. Joining Reel Big Fish for the festivities is Anti-Flag, who will be playing all of the classic album Die for the Government.

Between Reel Big Fish’s Southern Californian ska and Anti-Flag’s anarchopunk, you’ll get some sweet with your sour and some sugar with your spice.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony– 2/16

bones

The Observatory

Best known for their fast-paced rapping style and harmonizing vocals they always put on a SHOW.

Erykah Badu– 2/17

Erykah Badu

The Observatory

Singer-songwriter, record producer, disc jockey, activist, and actress Erykah Badu is undeniably a Bad Ass and if you have the chance to go see her you would be crazy to pass it up!

Cut Chemist – 2/17

Music Box

Little Italy

DJing since the age of 11, Cut Chemist has performed with other groups such as Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. He even supported Shakira on her 2007 “Oral Fixation” tour where he mixed world music with cut ‘n’ scratch audio visual presentation.

Cut Chemist plans to continue pushing the boundaries of hip-hop and what DJing means. No time like the present to see what the future holds for Cut Chemist.

Adam Ant & Galm Skanks– 2/18

adamant

The Observatory

Arguably the King of post punk pop Adam Ant will be live in San Diego on the 18th!

The Coathangers – 2/18

The Casbah

Little Italy

Atlanta punk-rock band The Coathangers started in 2006 as a joke. Invited to open for The Hiss after its inaugural performance, The Coathangers is a joke that didn’t get played out.

Named for a crude method of abortion, The Coathangers is firmly pro-choice.

Surfer Blood – 2/18

Soda Bar

City Heights

This West Palm Beach, Florida indie rock band had Pitchfork’s 37th best song of the year in 2009 for the track “Swim.” That same track can be heard in an episode of Netflix’s Daredevil.

Surfer Blood’s fourth album dropped on February 3rd of this year. Hear the band and get the record here.

The Frights – 2/18

SOMA

Midway District

A self-described “garage-surf-punk mess,” The Frights also throw some ‘50s rockabilly in for good measure.

The band sings about it all from “hook-ups to break-ups” in everything from a “croon to a wail.”

These fresh-faced, young lads remind us it’s never too early to start rockin’ out.
