Get Wild: Nature Collective’s Free Tours Unlock San Elijo Lagoon’s Hidden World
Nature Collective is offering something genuinely special with their August & September events featuring free Discovery and Wildlife Tours throughout both months.
When a local conservation nonprofit opens up the hidden world of San Elijo Lagoon through expert-led guided explorations, it’s the kind of opportunity that transforms how you see one of San Diego‘s most important ecosystems.

Two Different Ways to Connect with Nature
The Discovery Tours (ages 9+) and Wildlife Tours (ages 15+) offer distinct experiences tailored to different interests and age groups.
Discovery Tours focus on the accessible Nature Center Loop Trail, making them perfect for families looking to explore together. These 90-minute experiences highlight where freshwater and saltwater meet, creating that unique brackish environment that supports both migratory and resident birds.
Wildlife Tours take a more specialized approach, venturing into San Elijo’s trails for deeper wildlife encounters. These two-hour experiences cater to those ready for more challenging terrain and focused wildlife observation. The fact that they explicitly mention wildlife is unpredictable and there are no guarantees about what you’ll see actually makes these tours more authentic—real nature doesn’t come with scripted outcomes.
Summer’s Hidden Life
The August Wildlife Tour tackles something most people don’t realize—that summer’s seemingly dormant landscape is actually teeming with life. Those plants that appear lifeless are actually crucial habitats for resilient species that have evolved to handle intense sunlight and water scarcity.
Having experts point out these adaptations and the diversity they support transforms what might look like barren terrain into a complex ecosystem.

Seasonal Transitions in September
September’s Wildlife Tour captures that fascinating transition as summer days shorten and early winter birds begin arriving. The description of Phalaropes swimming in dizzy circles, colorful Argiope spiders in their tidy webs, and emerald green lynx spiders hidden against foliage waiting to ambush passing bees paints a picture of nature’s intricate seasonal choreography that most of us miss.
