Communal Coffee is officially opening its doors in Bankers Hill, marking the fifth location for the beloved San Diego coffee brand.

Owner Jen Byard is hosting a grand opening celebration featuring exclusive goodie bags for the first 50 guests, live DJ, cake by Lemon Bar Bakery, and free balloons, stickers, and flowers, with doors opening bright and early.

Communal Bankers Hill

A Neighborhood Extension

For Byard, who lives just minutes away in Golden Hill and has called San Diego home for over 15 years while raising her three sons, bringing Communal to Bankers Hill feels like an extension of her own community.

True to its mission of creating spaces that connect to the communities they’re in, this location naturally complements Bankers Hill’s blend of charm and vibrant community life.

The coffee shop welcomes neighbors and visitors of all ages to gather for coffee, conversation, or a stroll through the adjacent Olive Street Park. It’s designed as a place for everyone to commune in Bankers Hill, living up to the brand’s name and philosophy.

The Perfect Partnership

Located inside Kaya, a striking new 78-unit midrise at 2710 Third Avenue, Communal’s new location offers seating for 60 guests in Kaya’s vintage Brazilian-inspired lobby. The collaborative space serves both residents and Communal customers, whether for meetups or quiet moments with a book.

The architecturally rich lobby features comfortable couches and communal tables that invite people to slow down and connect. There’s also a welcoming 20-seat patio adjacent to Olive Street Park, making it easy to grab coffee and spend the day at the park with kids, dogs, or neighbors.

Long-Awaited Collaboration

This location represents the culmination of a long-envisioned collaboration between Byard and architect Jeff Svitak, whose past work includes Louisiana Purchase, which opened around the same time as Communal’s first North Park location.

Byard noted her respect for Svitak’s design sensibility and the way he thinks about space and community.

The way Svitak planned the building, with both indoor and outdoor elements, matched Communal’s values perfectly.

The Bankers Hill location felt right because of its strong neighborhood feel, and with Kaya providing a built-in community, the partnership creates something special for both residents and the broader neighborhood.

What to Expect

The new location continues Communal’s signature approach with thoughtfully designed spaces, a full craft coffee and seasonal food menu, and curated retail. You can expect the same beloved coffee, seasonal fare, flowers, and retail selection that have made the North Park, South Park, and Oceanside locations so popular.

Starting hours are 6:30 AM to 5 PM daily, with plans to extend hours and add beer and wine offerings in the future. The kid and dog-friendly location makes it accessible for families and pet owners who want to combine their coffee run with park time.

See you there!
