Polar Express Family Day at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum
The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is turning up the holiday cheer with Polar Express Family Day, and yes, pajamas are not only allowed but encouraged. It’s the kind of low-key family event that delivers holiday magic without the usual chaos of seasonal outings.
Two Screenings, One Classic
The Polar Express screens twice – 11:30 AM to 1:15 PM and 2 PM to 3:45 PM – giving families flexibility to choose the time that works best. Whether you’ve seen it a dozen times or you’re introducing it to your kids for the first time, watching it in a museum setting while wearing pajamas just hits different.

Santa Makes an Appearance
Between the two screenings, Santa stops by from 1:15 PM to 2 PM. It’s a quick window, so plan accordingly if meeting him is on your list. The timing works perfectly for families catching the first screening or arriving early for the second one.
Crafts and More
Holiday crafts keep little hands busy throughout the day, and goodie bags are available while supplies last – which is museum code for “get there early if you want one.” The museum’s exhibits remain open for exploring, so you can check out the model railroad displays that make this place special year-round.
Easy Admission
Polar Express Family Day is included with regular museum admission and the Balboa Park Explorer Pass. Kids 12 and under get in free, which makes this an affordable family outing during a season when everything seems to cost twice as much as it should.
One important note: there will be no full-size rideable train at this event. The focus is on the film, crafts, and exhibits.
See you there!
Break out the pajamas and celebrate the season with a beloved holiday film and festive family fun.
