Giulio Cesare Brings Baroque Drama and Ballet to USD’s Shiley Theatre

If we’re looking for a cultural afternoon plan that feels a little elevated, Cinballera Entertainment is bringing Handel’s Giulio Cesare to the Shiley Theatre – and it’s the kind of sweeping story that still hits centuries later.

Often considered Handel’s greatest opera, Giulio Cesare dives into the legendary romance between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, set against the backdrop of conquest, ambition, and war. It’s one of history’s most dramatic love stories, told through some of the most powerful music of the Baroque era.

Giulio Cesare Shiley Theatre

A Classic, Reimagined for Modern Audiences

Baroque operas are known for their grandeur – and their length. Rather than presenting the nearly four-hour original, Cinballera has crafted a dynamic production that honors tradition while keeping the pacing engaging.

This staging blends live opera with classical ballet, creating a layered storytelling experience. Julius Caesar is portrayed by a commanding bass, Cleopatra by a shimmering soprano, and Ptolemy by a countertenor – a rare vocal style that recreates the high male voices of the 18th century.

Three additional characters are expressed through original ballet choreography inspired by Roman and Egyptian aesthetics, adding visual depth to the emotional drama. The character Nirenus bridges both worlds, singing in a bright tenor voice while also dancing and acting as a triple agent within the story.

Period Detail Meets Theatrical Flair

Accompanied by period-correct harpsichord music, the production leans into Baroque style while incorporating cinematic touches like projected backdrops and silent film-style title cards to move the plot along.

With dignified sets and beautiful period costumes, the performance transports us to ancient Egypt during the Ptolemaic Wars – but in a way that feels accessible and engaging rather than academic.

It’s a perfect excuse for a cultured afternoon at USD, whether we’re longtime opera fans or simply curious to experience something different.

See you there!

We’re always up for an afternoon that mixes history, music, and a little dramatic flair.
