Shakespeare’s Dreamiest Ballet is Coming to Balboa Park
When you mix Shakespeare’s most whimsical story with live ballet, a historic downtown theater, and choreography by one of San Diego’s own – you get a closing night for the season that’s genuinely hard to top.
Fairies, Fools, and Footwork
Golden State Ballet brings A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the Balboa Theatre for three performances this June, and it’s exactly the kind of production that earns its standing ovation.
Artistic Director Raúl Salamanca‘s choreography moves through Shakespeare’s enchanted forest with a lightness and humor that makes the whole thing feel alive – spellbound lovers, mischievous sprites, mistaken identities, and all the delightful chaos that comes with it.
The run time is about 90 minutes including a 15-minute intermission, and the show is recommended for ages three and up, making it one of those rare performances that works just as well for a date night as it does for a family afternoon out.

A Double Bill Worth Showing Up Early For
The program also features The Four Seasons by Houston Thomas, a Princess Grace Award recipient whose work premiered in Golden State Ballet’s spring triple bill. It’s a beautiful pairing – two very different pieces that together make for a full, satisfying evening of dance.
The Best Way to Get Tickets
Golden State Ballet has a Box Office Concierge Service that lets you email directly to choose your seats – no extra fees, no service charges, and your purchase goes straight to supporting the dancers and staff.
You can also grab tickets through Ticketmaster or at the Balboa Theatre Box Office in person. Wheelchair and accessibility services are available.
