Take a Stroll Through Point Loma’s New Public Art
Point Loma Village is getting a fresh dose of color, and the whole community is invited to celebrate a bold new mural by acclaimed San Diego artist Sarah Stieber, plus 15 newly painted utility box art installations scattered throughout the Village.
The celebration brings it all together with a reception, dedication program, and a self-guided public art walk, so there’s plenty of reason to come out and soak up the color for yourself.
Where Art Meets the Coast
Sarah Stieber’s new mural on Rosecrans Street marks her second piece in Point Loma, following her earlier work at The Monsaraz Hotel.
After walking the neighborhood and talking with residents and local businesses, Stieber designed the piece to capture Point Loma’s relaxed coastal character, hoping it inspires people to slow down, soak in the coast, and embrace a little spontaneity.
Her work has appeared for brands like Samsung, Marriott, Topo Chico, and Penguin Random House, and she’s been recognized by San Diego Magazine and Modern Luxury for her contemporary art and mural work.
Utility Boxes Turned Works of Art
The celebration also spotlights 15 newly painted utility boxes surrounding Cabrillo Elementary and Cabrillo Recreation Center.
Ten of the pieces come from Kristel Boe, founder of ArtBeat San Diego and a longtime contributor to Point Loma’s utility box art program, with designs themed around growth and flourishing, plus a nod to Cabrillo Elementary’s “Every Explorer, Every Day” spirit.
The remaining boxes come from retired muralist Linda Churchill, whose work through her former business, Muralizing, has left a colorful mark on utility boxes throughout the neighborhood for years, often drawing on local landscapes and flowers for inspiration.
Building Community Through Public Art
“Public art does more than beautify a neighborhood, it creates a sense of place and gives people another reason to connect with the community around them,” said Jeff Bolster, President of the Point Loma Association.
“Supporting artists and bringing their work into our shared public spaces is an important investment in the character of the Peninsula.”
The celebration kicks off with a reception and short dedication program featuring the artists, followed by a self-guided stroll through the Village to discover each piece and meet the people behind them.
