Hear a World Premiere at Camarada’s Where Beauty Persists

One piece on this program has never been played for an audience. Camarada gives Texu Kim‘s new Composer’s Circle commission its world premiere in the Baker-Baum Concert Hall, on a night that also reaches back to Telemann.

Texu Kim Writes for Curiosity and Surprise

Kim is the featured composer here, and Camarada commissioned the piece through its Composer’s Circle. The program describes a work built around curiosity and surprise, in a contemporary voice.

That is close to everything anyone can tell you about it right now, which is the appeal. A premiere is the one night where the whole room meets a piece at the same moment.

Flute and Vibraphone, and the Piece the Night is Named For

Steve Rouse wrote Where Beauty Persists for flute and vibraphone, a pairing you do not run into often. One instrument is all breath, the other all resonance, and together they sit somewhere between warm and weightless.

Rebecca Clarke’s Comodo et Amabile brings the lyrical side of the program. It is the kind of writing that rewards close listening, which is what a chamber hall is for.

Telemann in D Major, Arensky at Full Tilt

Telemann’s Flute Concerto in D Major pulls the evening back to the baroque, all clean lines and forward motion. It is the oldest music on the program by a wide margin.

Arensky’s Piano Trio supplies the romantic heat, and Kenji Bunch’s Chamber Concerto brings the restless, recent energy. Roughly three hundred years of music, one sitting.

Seven Players, and the One Behind the Vibraphone

Beth Ross Buckley plays flute, with David Buckley and Batya MacAdams-Somer on violin, Travis Maril on viola, and Ruslan Biryukov on cello.

Dana Burnett takes the piano and Wesley Fowler handles percussion, which is where that vibraphone comes in. Jeff Barnouw underwrites the concert.

Camarada is a resident company at The Conrad, so La Jolla is home turf for this group.
