DJ Quik Brings West Coast G-Funk to North Park

There’s a reason DJ Quik has been doing this for over three decades – the man doesn’t just perform, he plays. As one of the architects of West Coast G-funk, Quik brings a live musicianship to hip-hop that’s genuinely rare in the genre.

Heavy basslines, smooth grooves, talkbox effects, and a production sensibility rooted in funk and soul. This isn’t a nostalgia set. It’s a masterclass.

DJ Quik

The Compton Legend in San Diego

Born David Marvin Blake and raised in Compton, Quik built his name selling underground mixtapes before his 1991 debut Quik Is the Name put him on the map.

That record – anchored by the hit “Tonite” and eventually certified Platinum – set the tone for a career defined by tight production and an unmistakable sonic identity. From Way 2 Fonky to The Book of David to The Midnight Life, his catalog holds up, and then some.

DJ Quik

More Than an MC

What makes a Quik show different is what he brings to the stage. Beyond rapping, he’s a respected producer and audio engineer who’s worked with Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Tupac Shakur, and more.

Fans who know the deep cuts often say he’s one of the most underrated artists in hip-hop history – someone whose influence runs through the genre without always getting the credit he deserves. Catching him live is a chance to experience that firsthand.

Plus: Suga Free

Joining Quik on the bill is Suga Free, the Pomona rapper born Dejuan Walker, who got his start working with Quik directly. Quik produced his 1997 debut Street Gospel, which charted on the Billboard R&B albums chart and announced him as a voice worth following.

Known for a rapid-fire yet conversational style and a charismatic stage presence, he’s gone on to release a string of albums and compilations over the years. The two share a creative history that makes this more than a random double bill.

The Observatory North Park

The Observatory North Park is one of San Diego’s best spots for a show like this – intimate enough to feel the room, with sound and sight lines that suit the vibe Quik brings. General admission is $39.30.

See you there!

Come ready to move. DJ Quik at the Observatory is a proper night out. Good music, good crowd, and one of hip-hop’s most respected voices doing what he does best.
