About Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
Built in 1925 as the park’s main attraction, the vintage wooden roller coaster, The Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, has since been designated as a National Landmark, staying true to its original purpose; attracting both locals and travelers to San Diego’s beachfront boardwalk. The roller coaster has been cherished amongst the San Diego community since its opening, so much so that when it fell into disrepair after decades of operation, a group of concerned citizens formed a, “Save the Coaster Committee,” receiving a preservation grant to raise funds locally and tend to the beloved coaster.
Without raising the necessary funds, Belmont Park’s tenants agreed that having the coaster restored would be extremely beneficial to the property as a whole and spent over $2,000,000 and three years bringing The Giant Dipper Roller Coaster back to life. Improvements included an all-new track and trackbed, 11,000 new bolts, thousands of feet of lumber and two new trains with modern restraint systems. Today, The Giant Dipper Roller Coaster stands as an icon of the San Diego beachfront with speeds up to 48 MPH, sharp dips and turns with the cherry on top being its sweeping oceanfront view.
