The weather may be cooling, but things are just warming up in La Jolla Music Society (LJMS)’s 55th Anniversary Season, which continues in November with exciting debuts, masters of world music, a heartwarming family event, cutting-edge innovative music, and more.

November 1 | Turn It Out With Tiler Peck & Friends

A truly special event kicks off the month of November at the Civic Theatre, when award-winning New York City Ballet principal dancer, choreographer, actress, author, curator, and designer Tiler Peck tackles the new role of director for TURN IT OUT WITH TILER PECK & FRIENDS on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 7:30PM.

With her personal touches on every aspect of this unique evening, Tiler Peck has assembled some of today’s most exciting dance artists and choreographers for a virtuosic and innovative program which sold out in London and New York and now debuts in San Diego to launch our 2023–24 Dance Series.

November 10 | Silkroad Ensemble

Under the new leadership of GRAMMY and Pulitzer winner Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens, SILKROAD ENSEMBLE brings us its newest initiative, American Railroad, illuminating the impact of African American, Chinese, Indigenous, Irish, and other immigrant communities on the creation of the US Transcontinental Railroad and connecting railways in North America.

Through new and revitalized music, Giddens’ troupe of global music virtuosi explores the dissemination of cultures across the United States, where the railroad was to North America what the Silk Road was to China, the Far East, and Europe. Part of our Global Roots Series and the California Festival of New Music, this performance on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 7:30PM at the Balboa Theatre marks Giddens’ LJMS debut.

November 11 | Coco Live-To-Film Concert

No family can forget the COCO LIVE-TO-FILM CONCERT, a unique screening of the heartwarming smash hit film with composer Michael Giacchino’s musical score performed by the 20-member Orquesta Folclórica Nacional de México.

A Disney Pixar classic about a young boy discovering his family’s history and the power of music, Coco also features the Academy Award-winning song “Remember Me” by songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and additional songs co-written by Germaine Franco and co-director and screenwriter Adrian Molina.

This special family event will be performed in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 3:30PM in Spanish and 7:30PM in English.

November 16 | Alisa Weilerstein: Fragments 2

Renowned cellist ALISA WEILERSTEIN returns on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 7:30PM in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall for FRAGMENTS 2, the second installment of her groundbreaking, multi-year project FRAGMENTS.

This innovative series weaves together the 36 movements of Bach’s solo cello suites with 27 newly commissioned works. The resulting collection is divided into six Fragments, each an hour long and blending five to six composers, to be released independently over several seasons—the first of these graced our stage in the 2022–23 season. Within each Fragment, individual movements from a single Bach suite are thoughtfully integrated with selected new works to create a new emotional arc.

Enhanced by responsive lighting and scenic architecture, the music is performed without pause and without a program, making for a wholly original and immersive audience experience. Part of our ProtoStar Innovative Series, this concert is co-produced by the San Diego Symphony and is part of the California Festival of New Music.

November 19 | Mao Fujita, piano

With an innate musical sensitivity and naturalness to his artistry, 24-year-old pianist MAO FUJITA has already impressed many leading musicians as one of those special talents which come along only rarely, equally at home in Mozart as the major romantic repertoire.

He was a First Prize winner of the Concours International de Piano Clara Haskil in Switzerland and Silver Medalist at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition, and his LJMS debut as part of our Discovery Series on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 3 p.m. in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall brings us a lush program of Chopin and Liszt.

November 30 | Flor de Toloache

To wrap up the month on Thursday, November 30, 2023, the Latin GRAMMY Award–winning, all-female group FLOR DE TOLOACHE mixes tradition and innovation, breaking boundaries with its edgy, versatile, and fresh take on traditional Latin American music. NPR says “Flor de Toloache stuns at the crossroads of fusion and mariachi girl magic.” Join them for two shows in The JAI, at 6PM & 8:30PM.
