La Jolla Symphony & Chorus is Hosting an All-Day Music Marathon – And it’s Free

San Diego has no shortage of ways to spend a Sunday, but this one is a little different. The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C) is putting on their very first “Play-and-Sing-a-Thon” at UC San Diego, and it’s shaping up to be a genuinely special day for anyone who loves live music.

La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Play-and-Sing-a-Thon

Seven Hours of Live Music at UCSD

The idea is simple and kind of wonderful: musicians take the stage and keep the music going, one after another, for seven straight hours.

Over 25 performers are expected to participate, including LJS&C ensemble members, students, alumni, and community musicians from outside the ensemble. The range of selections promises to be anything but predictable.

As executive director Stephanie Weaver Yankee puts it, “Some performers are bringing back old favorites, while others are diving into something new. It’s all about making music together, enjoying the moment, and sharing that joy while supporting a great cause.”

A Fundraiser With a Lot of Heart

This marathon is more than a showcase – it’s a fundraiser supporting LJS&C’s mission to inspire, educate, and connect with the San Diego community.

The nonprofit has been part of the city’s cultural fabric for over 70 years, and their volunteer ensemble of more than 230 musicians reflects just how deeply rooted they are here.

The event wraps up with a community sing-along featuring favorites from the Great American Songbook, led by David and Elisabeth Leatherberry, followed by a champagne toast from 7 PM to 8 PM. It’s a pretty great way to close out a Sunday.

Want to Perform? You’re Invited

Musicians, vocalists, and instrumentalists of all kinds are welcome to join in on the fun. Head to the link below for registration details and information on how to sponsor a performer.

Admission to watch is free and open to everyone. The performances take place at the Conrad Prebys Music Center Building at UC San Diego.

See you there!

A free afternoon of live music, community, and a champagne toast to close things out – this is exactly the kind of Sunday we’re here for.
