Honor, Remember, and Give Back at Punches in the Piazza in Little Italy
The fourth annual Punches in the Piazza returns to Little Italy’s Piazza della Famiglia for an evening that blends amateur boxing, community connection, and meaningful philanthropy.
This year carries extra significance – falling on the 25th anniversary of September 11, it’s one of the few public events in San Diego where the community gathers to honor first responders, remember those lost, and give back in a meaningful way.

A Night of Boxing, Tribute, and Community
The evening features nine USA Boxing-sanctioned amateur bouts showcasing local athletes, alongside special ceremonial tributes, silent auction opportunities, raffle prizes, VIP experiences, and commemorative merchandise.
It’s the kind of event that manages to be genuinely entertaining while never losing sight of the purpose behind it.
All proceeds benefit two deserving organizations – the Washington Elementary School Foundation, which supports programs and resources for San Diego children, and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the families of military service members, veterans, and first responders through housing assistance programs.
Organizers are aiming to raise $50,000 through ticket sales, sponsorships, donations, and fundraising activities throughout the evening.

The Man Behind the Mission
Punches in the Piazza was founded in honor of Bobby DePhilippis – one of San Diego’s most influential boxing figures, a Hall of Fame promoter who produced more than 60 boxing events at the El Cortez Convention Center and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012.
His daughter Michelle DePhilippis established the Bobby D. Foundation to carry on his legacy, supporting community programs with a focus on underprivileged children throughout San Diego.
