Spring has officially sprung, and Cape Rey in Carlsbad is celebrating the arrival of late sunsets and warmer temperatures with a poolside party in their beer garden!
On Friday, March 24th, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, the Brews, Beats and Eats bash will be packed with all-you-can-eat mahi mahi and carnitas tacos, delicious craft beers from our favorite local breweries like Stone Brewing, Bay City Brewing and Iron First Brewing, and awesome live music from local acoustic rock band Ottopilot!
In excitement leading up to the big night, we got the chance to chat with Ottopilot vocalist/pianist/guitarist, Brandon Vogt, about the upcoming performance, how the band got started and what’s on the horizon.
Ottopilot formed in 2009 as a duo of brothers and long time North County residents Brandon and Chad Vogt. Although the siblings were born in Los Angeles, they moved to San Diego at a young age and have lived in Solana Beach, Cardiff and Encinitas for most of their lives.
“I tried moving back to L.A. to pursue music but I found myself unhappy and out of place,” said Brandon. “San Diego is the best and it allows me to keep a clear mind.”
We feel you, Brandon!
Ottopilot, who recently added new band member Aaron Nichols on lead guitar, has experimented with various genres ranging from pop to country to electronic over the years, leading to a sound that can be appreciated by many.
They’ve also accumulated quite a list of accomplishments, including opening for major acts like Gavin DeGraw and Mat Kearney.
“Personally my favorite memory is performing for the U.S. Open tennis finals in New York for over 20,000 fans,” said Brandon. “I’m a huge tennis fan and player myself and the experience was unforgettable.”
Of course, Brews, Beats and Eats, with an expected attendance of about 100 people, will be a substantially smaller venue than the U.S. Open. Ottopilot is already familiar with Cape Rey’s intimate outdoor setting after performing as part of last year’s Summer Concert Series.
“We had a blast last time we were at the Cape,” said Brandon. “It’s a beautiful setting overlooking the ocean and this time we’re paired with some awesome local breweries and food. We’re excited to be back.”

While the band will play an assortment of their acoustic hits throughout the evening, be sure to keep an ear out for one of their newest songs, “Count On Me.”
“We’re not labeled as a country band but this one pushes the southern rock vibe with a message about the importance of trust in any relationship,” explained Brandon.
Even more new music is on the way for Ottopilot, who plan to release a new EP on Pacific Records in April or May. The band plans to play a local showcase to promote the new release. Visit their website to stay up to date on announcements.
