Matrix Multiplied: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking Opens at Oceanside Museum of Art
Contemporary printmaking has moved beyond a strictly repetition-based approach and into more exploratory territory, and Oceanside Museum of Art is spotlighting this evolution with a new group exhibition that shows just how far the medium has come.
Matrix Multiplied: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking features artists who challenge conventional definitions of printmaking through hybrid, experimental processes that combine multiple techniques into richly dimensional works.

Combining Techniques to Push the Medium Forward
Curated by Danielle Deery, the exhibition is a survey of artists who layer two or more printmaking techniques—like relief, intaglio, lithography, and silkscreen—with digital technologies, drawing, or collage.
Featured artists include Frol Boundin, Michele Burgess, Jennifer Chen, Evelyn Contreras, Bill Kelly, Chris Lahti, Kelvin Lopez, Joan Mathison, Kimiko Miyoshi, Chris Paddila, Yvette Ramon, Sibyl Rubottom, Jose Hugo Lopez Sanchez, Niel Shigley, Tava Tedesco, and Clay West.
The range of approaches on display shows how contemporary printmakers are expanding what the medium can do.
A Rare Look at the Matrices Behind the Prints
One of the unique elements of the exhibition is the inclusion of select matrices—the plates that hold the image to be printed. Seeing these alongside the finished works gives you rare insight into the labor-intensive, hand-crafted processes behind each piece and the relationship between the original matrix and the multiple impressions it produces.
It’s the kind of detail that makes you appreciate the technical skill involved in a way you might not otherwise.

Exhibition Celebration in May
OMA will celebrate the exhibition with an Exhibition Celebration, inviting the public to meet participating artists and learn about their processes directly from the people making the work. It’s a chance to ask questions and get a deeper understanding of how these hybrid approaches actually come together.
