Moulin Rouge! is Back on the Big Screen – and This Time, it’s Outside
There are movies you’ve seen a dozen times, and then there are movies that demand to be seen in the best possible setting. Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! – all glitter, heartbreak, and pop music chaos – turns 25 this year, and Rooftop Cinema Club in Little Italy is marking the occasion with a special outdoor screening that might just be the most fitting way to revisit it.

A Film That Still Hits Differently
If you haven’t watched it recently, Moulin Rouge! holds up in all the ways that matter. The story is classic and devastating – a penniless poet named Christian falls hard for Satine, the dazzling star of Paris’s most notorious nightclub, while a jealous Duke with deep pockets threatens to pull them apart.
Luhrmann wraps all of it in neon, velvet, and a soundtrack that smashes together pop hits from across decades to tell a story set in 1890s Paris. It should not work. It absolutely works.
The frenetic editing, the operatic drama, the medleys that somehow make “Your Song” and “Roxanne” feel like they were written for this exact moment – 25 years on, there’s a reason people still quote it, still cry at it, still love it.

The Setting Makes it Something Else
Rooftop Cinema Club’s Little Italy location sits on the fifth floor of Columbia St., giving you open-air views alongside the film. Watching a film about a Parisian nightclub from a rooftop on a warm San Diego evening has a kind of poetic logic to it.
Doors open an hour before showtime – plenty of time to settle in, grab a drink, and soak up the pre-show atmosphere before the lights go down.
Before You Go
Rooftop Cinema Club keeps things casual but elevated. Check their site for the full experience details – seating setup, what’s available at the venue, and anything else you’ll want to know ahead of time. And with a 25th anniversary screening of a film this beloved, tickets aren’t something to sit on.
See you there!
Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, Moulin Rouge! on a rooftop under the San Diego sky is the kind of night worth making plans for.
