Oncology And Kids (OAK) Re-Launches To Support Kids Impacted By Cancer

Oncology And Kids (OAK), a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to ensuring that no child feels alone when dealing with cancer, is re-launching on Saturday, June 19th. OAK’s programming helps with the emotional toll that cancer takes on children and their families.

Current initiatives include the Junior Council for kids between the ages of 12-21 who are developing an emotional health toolkit for kids their ages to deal with life during and after cancer, Camp Reach for the Sky, that since 1983 has provided children impacted by cancer and their siblings (between the ages of 4 and 17) the chance to simply be kids again.

A fresh start

The original OAK launch was March 7, 2020 – two days before COVID officially shut down everything for more than a year. The 2021 relaunch will be a reintroduction of OAK programs and services to the San Diego childhood cancer community after a year of uncertain pandemic times.

The re-launch event will connect new families with a childhood cancer diagnosis with existing families and will serve as a fundraiser to support the 2021 Virtual Camp Reach for the Sky and in-person Family Camp.

Re-launch party at Mike Hess Brewing

The OAK re-launch event will be held at Mike Hess Brewing in Imperial Beach. The Hess Family has been tied to Camp Reach for the Sky for three years; their daughter Keely attends Resident Oncology Camp.

CEO of OAK, Bernard Mauricia says, “The collaboration with Hess also supports parents that have their worlds turned upside down and look for opportunities to socialize with others as they battle through their plight. The Hess Family is a perfect example of a family that is community-driven and looks to open the conversation to the effects that cancer has on an entire family and show how the beer community can support them.”

See you there….and stay healthy, San Diego!
