The Reverend and the Road
Jim “The Reverend” Heath has been at this since 1986, when he and upright bassist Jimbo Wallace started making noise out of Dallas’s Deep Ellum neighborhood. What started as a two-piece grew into a trio with Jonathan Jeter – a fusion of 1950s country, surf, punk, swing, and rockabilly that carved out a lane nobody else was in.
At their peak, they were playing over 275 shows a year – enough to land deals with Sub Pop Records and later Interscope.
Albums like Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em, The Full-Custom Gospel Sounds, and Liquor in the Front built the following, but it’s the live show where it all makes sense: high-speed guitar runs, a raw stage presence, and an energy that doesn’t let up for the whole set.
Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys
Southern California’s own Robert Williams – known as Big Sandy – has been at this since 1988, driven by a childhood obsession with Country, Doo-Wop, and Rhythm & Blues. With a personal record collection now north of 75,000 and counting, the depth of his influences runs through everything the band does.
More than two dozen releases in and close to 35 years on the road, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys remain a standout on the Americana circuit. A recent tribute to Tex-Mex icon Freddy Fender shows they’re still pushing forward – not content to rest on a catalog that already speaks for itself.
