Rooftop Cinema Club Lifts the Curtain on its Schedule Through Fourth of July Weekend

Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero lifts the curtain on its schedule through the Fourth of July Weekend with a cinematic showcase featuring nearly 200 films.

Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Black Music Month, and Pride Month are among the themes set to be celebrated at San Diego’s iconic outdoor cinema atop the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The complete lineup through July 7 is available here.

Rooftop Cinema Club Films & Special Events Highlights

May is AAPI Heritage Month, and throughout the month, Rooftop Cinema Club will celebrate the many facets of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera.

Count Moana, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Crazy Rich Asians are among the groundbreaking films created by AAPI filmmakers and artists that you can watch at Rooftop Cinema Club in May.

In honor of June’s Black Music Month, RCC is also showcasing the power of Black music in movies.

While the schedule includes films like Poetic Justice and Brown Sugar, it also features a Purple Rain Movie Night & Silent Disco to celebrate the late pop musician, who would have turned 64 on June 7, and the iconic film that was released in theaters 40 years ago back in 1984.

June is also the month of Juneteenth (June 19th), and Rooftop Cinema Club has a trio of films (Love & Basketball, White Chicks, and The Blackening) queued up in recognition, highlighting Black filmmakers.

June’s Pride Month is a big deal in San Diego, and to celebrate, Rooftop Cinema Club will host unique special events and show a collection of films either made by or starring LGBTQIA+ artists, those that tell their stories and others that are beloved by the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Pride Month film lineup includes classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bohemian Rhapsody, while the special events include a fantastically fun Drag Me to the Movies: Movie and Drag Show on June 23.

Drag Me to the Movies will feature fun and games and a movie-themed lineup of drag performers sashaying down the runway at Rooftop Cinema Club.

As you peruse the Rooftop Cinema Club lineup, you’ll also discover films like Bridesmaids, The Wedding Planner, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and, of course, Wedding Crashers, among a series of films being screened in honor of Wedding Season.

Top 1994 and 1999 release titles to be screened include Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Speed, The Sixth Sense and The Shawshank Redemption.

Throughout May, June, and early July, Rooftop Cinema Club will continue its popular special events series. Detailed descriptions of all the additional special events are below, but RCC is excited to introduce several new ones, including its Saturday Cereal Club, its Mimosa & Muffins Sundays, and a 4th of July BBQ and Party.

May the 4th

On Saturday, May 4, the Rooftop Cinema Club will celebrate Star Wars Day with a trilogy of Star Wars films (separate admission required). The lineup includes Episodes IV (A New Hope), V (The Empire Strikes Back), and VI (The Return of the Jedi). Throughout the day, there will be Star Wars trivia contests, photo ops, and costume contests.

Revenge of the 5th

On Sunday, May 5, the RCC will keep the Star Wars Day fun going with a themed party for “Revenge of the Fifth” featuring Star Wars trivia, photo ops, and a costume contest, followed by a screening of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith on the big screen.

Saturday Cereal Club

Once upon a time, Saturday morning cartoons were a hallmark of childhood. The Rooftop Cinema Club is recreating those nostalgic Saturday morning vibes with its Saturday Cereal Club on select Saturdays. A wide selection of cereal favorites will be offered, starting with a special pre-roll featuring vintage cartoons.

Mimosa & Muffins Sundays

The RCC is starting a new “Sunday Funday” tradition with its Mimosa & Muffins Sundays. On these special Sundays, all paid guests will enjoy a refreshing sparkling mimosa and a complimentary muffin to get their morning started at the Rooftop. Mimosa & Muffins Sundays are only open to guests 21+.

Celebrate Moms and Dads on the Rooftop

The Rooftop Cinema Club is the place to bring Mom and Dad for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day!

Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day (May 12) with a lineup that features Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, The Princess Bride, and Crazy Stupid Love. Pay homage to Dad on Father’s Day (June 16) with a selection of films that includes Finding Nemo, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Big Daddy, and Goodfellas.

Pulp Fiction 30th Anniversary Party

On May 17, Rooftop Cinema Club will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Quentin Tarantino’s classic film Pulp Fiction. The night will include a Rooftop party featuring a pre-screening soiree complete with trivia, a Twist dance-off, and a costume contest for those who arrive dressed as their favorite Pulp Fiction character.

Disco Isn’t Dead: Movie & Silent Disco

On May 24, the RCC is celebrating the disco revival with a Disco Isn’t Dead Movie Night & Silent Disco.

On this groovy night, enjoy the ABBA-inspired musical hit, Mamma Mia! followed by a silent disco where you can dance the night away to a set of everything from classic disco groups like ABBA, Chic, and the Bee Gees to the disco-inspired hits of today like “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus or “Dance the Night Away” by Dua Lipa.

4th of July Party

This 4th of July, the Rooftop Cinema Club is hosting a food and film party featuring Will Smith in Independence Day. You’ll be greeted on the Rooftop by live Americana music, and each ticket includes a plate of delicious barbecue food and a soft drink.

All ticket orders for the 4th of July Party must be made by Thursday, June 29, to allow time for food orders to be placed.

Following the film, you’re welcome to stick around and watch the fireworks around San Diego from the Rooftop Cinema Club’s iconic location atop the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Tuesday Social Hour

Every Tuesday, two hours before the first film of the night, the Rooftop Cinema Club offers live music, lawn and table games, and drinks. A $9 Social Hour ticket includes access to the entertainment and a complimentary drink, while a $29 ticket includes all the above plus the film.

Singles Night

RCC’s Singles Nights are a chance for San Diego singles to get out and mingle on the Rooftop. Featuring a 90-minute Singles Night mixer before the movie with a live DJ, Singles Nights are open to all who are single and 21+.

Upcoming Singles Nights are scheduled for May 9 and June 6, and tickets are available for the mixer only or for a mixer + movie combo ticket.
