The Rosin Box Project Debuts Bold New Contemporary Ballet
The Rosin Box Project is bringing three world premieres to California Center for the Arts that showcase exactly why San Diego’s contemporary ballet scene continues to evolve and surprise us.
The DEBUTS program features inaugural collaborations with renowned choreographers Garrett Smith, Ching Ching Wong, and TRBP Artistic Director Carly Topazio, each exploring transformation, identity, and human connection through groundbreaking movement.

Visionary Choreographers Take the Stage
Garrett Smith brings his emotionally expansive and athletic choreography to TRBP for the first time, creating work that confronts the dualities of identity through explosive ensemble movement and visual minimalism.
As a former dancer with Houston Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet who has created works for companies worldwide including Ballet West and Joffrey Ballet, Smith’s collaboration with TRBP promises to push boundaries.
MacDowell Fellow and Princess Grace Award recipient Ching Ching Wong makes her choreographic debut with TRBP in a highly theatrical piece exploring memory, place, and ritual.
Her work with former company NW Dance Project and collaborations with renowned choreographer Ihsan Rustem have earned recognition for evocative detail and emotional resonance.

Risk and Innovation at the Forefront
Artistic Director Carly Topazio describes DEBUTS as “a moment of ignition” that marks new creative relationships and movement languages in ballet.
Her own new work continues pushing contemporary ballet boundaries through layered stagecraft and emotional nuance, balancing intimacy with expansiveness in ways that connect audience and artist.
What makes this program particularly exciting is how it celebrates artistic risk-taking. Each choreographer brings distinct perspectives to TRBP’s ensemble of boundary-pushing artists, creating work that defies traditional ballet conventions while honoring the form’s technical foundation.
Accessible Contemporary Art
The pricing structure makes this high-caliber contemporary ballet accessible, with tickets ranging from $45-55 and a virtual stream option for $25.
The virtual component extends the experience beyond the live performances, with streaming available through September 5 for those who want to experience these world premieres multiple times or share them with others.
TRBP continues establishing itself as a driving force in San Diego’s growing dance scene, creating work that feels both locally rooted and internationally relevant.
