Spend a Smooth Saturday at the San Diego Yacht Rock Festival

San Diego has a real claim to yacht rock. Harbors, sailboats, endless sun, and a whole culture built around not being in a hurry. The San Diego Yacht Rock Festival returns to Ingram Plaza at Liberty Station for a third year. It runs all day, and it is not a small one.

San Diego Yacht Rock Festival

Three Bands and a Captain at the Helm

Yachty By Nature headlines, and they have built a following on real musicianship and between-song banter that lands as well as the singalongs do. Expect the Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, and Steely Dan catalog handled with actual affection.

Dirty Yachtin’ Scoundrels bring six pieces of silky harmony up from Phoenix. Böaterhead makes its festival debut from Cleveland, and Captain Adam of Yacht Rock Radio runs the day as emcee, introducing every set and keeping the momentum up between them.

Wicked Maine Lobster, TNT BBQ, and a Champagne Pavilion

The food is local and unfussy. Wicked Maine Lobster, TNT BBQ, and Turkish Grill are on the vendor list so far, with more names still to come.

Snake Oil Cocktail Co. runs the bar, which tracks, since they co-produce the whole thing with EventVibe. There is also a wine and champagne pavilion if bubbles feel more on theme than a cocktail does.

Why 3,500 People Arrive Dressed Like That

More than 3,500 people are expected, and a good share of them will show up in captain’s hats, linen suits, tropical prints, white pants, and boat shoes. The costuming is not a side note. It is most of the appeal.

That is the difference between this and a regular concert on a lawn. The crowd becomes part of the show, and the people who commit to the theme have the better day.

See you there!

Pull the white pants out of the back of the closet, round up your smoothest friends, and give Liberty Station one long, easy Saturday of Michael McDonald deep cuts.
