Swing Into Nostalgia at “A Starlight Swing” Fundraiser in Balboa Park
Step back in time and spend a joyful afternoon filled with music, dancing, and community at A Starlight Swing, a special fundraiser supporting the restoration of San Diego’s historic Starlight Bowl.
Set against the scenic backdrop of Balboa Park, this celebration brings together timeless big band sounds and a shared commitment to preserving one of the city’s most cherished cultural landmarks.
Hosted by Save Starlight, the nonprofit dedicated to reviving and reimagining the iconic venue, the event offers a meaningful way to enjoy live entertainment while contributing to the future of the space.
An Afternoon of Big Band Magic
At the heart of the celebration is a live performance by The Mellotones Orchestra, led by the legendary Pete DeLuke. Known for their rich, authentic big band sound, the ensemble will set the stage for an afternoon of swing dancing and classic melodies that capture the glamour of a bygone era.
Whether you’re an experienced dancer or simply love the energy of live jazz, the welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to step onto the dance floor or sit back and enjoy the music.
Honoring a Living Legend
The event will also pay tribute to Pete DeLuke, a 96-year-old big band icon whose remarkable career spans decades. Beginning his professional journey as a reed player at just 15, DeLuke went on to perform with legendary bands led by Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and many more.
He has also shared the stage with some of the most celebrated vocalists in music history, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, and Perry Como.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, DeLuke will receive the first-ever Starlight Plaque, which will be permanently displayed at the Starlight Bowl.
Supporting the Future of the Starlight Bowl
More than just an afternoon of entertainment, A Starlight Swing plays a vital role in supporting Save Starlight’s mission to restore and revitalize the historic amphitheater. The event celebrates the venue’s rich legacy while helping ensure it remains a cultural destination for generations to come.
By attending, the community comes together to honor the past and invest in the future of live performance in San Diego.
