Watch Tchaikovsky’s Greatest Hits Come to Life at The Rady Shell
An audience favorite is back at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and this time it’s going all in on one composer: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, front and center for an entire evening.
If you’ve ever wanted to hear his most iconic pieces performed live in one sitting, this is your night.

A Night Built Around Tchaikovsky’s Genius
Conductor Manuel López-Gómez leads the San Diego Symphony through a program that opens with Gutiérrez’s Alma Llanera before diving headfirst into a run of Tchaikovsky favorites: the exuberant Capriccio italien, the dramatic tone poem Francesca da Rimini, and the crowd-pleasing 1812 Overture.
If you’ve ever wondered why Tchaikovsky’s music still hits this hard almost 150 years later, this is the night that answers the question.
Joyce Yang Takes on the Piano Concerto
Smack in the middle of the program, Grammy-nominated pianist Joyce Yang steps in for Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Major, one of the most recognizable piano concertos ever written.
Hearing those opening chords live, on the bay, backed by a full orchestra, hits differently than any recording ever could. Yang’s touch on this piece is exactly the kind of performance that turns casual listeners into lifelong fans of the concerto.
Fireworks Over the Bay
Then comes the big finish: the 1812 Overture, complete with pyrotechnics lighting up the bay as the piece builds to its finale. It’s the kind of ending that turns a great concert into a full-on event, which is exactly why this program keeps coming back year after year.
Heads up, this one does feature pyrotechnics, so keep that in mind if you’re planning your night out. Between the cannons, the bells, and the fireworks, it’s easily one of the most dramatic closers you’ll see on the water all summer.
See you there!
Bold melodies, a waterfront setting, and fireworks to close it out. This is summer in San Diego at its best. Bring someone you love the music with, because this is one to experience together.
