Watch Hotel Z Become Stellen San Diego Gaslamp in Early 2027

Downtown is getting a new hotel on Sixth Avenue, and the building is already standing. Stellen San Diego Gaslamp will open in the first quarter of 2027 in the space Hotel Z occupies today. It’s a full renovation and rebrand, not a fresh build.

The plan: 100 redesigned rooms, reworked public spaces, and a food and drink concept aimed at the neighborhood as much as the people staying upstairs.

100 Rooms and a Façade Meant to Change the Block

San Diego architecture firm Delawie is handling the design. The exterior gets a bright, contemporary façade with natural materials and landscaping, built to sit better on one of the busiest blocks in the Gaslamp.

Inside, the public spaces lean modern residential: warm natural materials, botanical accents, communal tables, and lounge seating you can actually settle into.

The idea is a pullback from the rhythm of the street without leaving it. That’s a tall order on Sixth Avenue, and it’s the part we’re most curious to see.

A Restaurant and Bar Built for Locals, Not Just Room Keys

The property is planning a locally driven food and beverage concept positioned as a destination in its own right, meant to work as a neighborhood social hub rather than a lobby afterthought.

No word yet on the concept, the operator, or who’s running the kitchen. When that lands, it’ll tell you a lot about how serious the local angle really is.

Your Bonvoy Points Will Work Here

Stellen San Diego Gaslamp joins Series by Marriott, the collection of independent and regional brands that keep their own identity while participating in Marriott Bonvoy.

Translation: a boutique hotel that still lets you earn and redeem. If you’ve been sitting on points and waiting for somewhere downtown worth spending them, keep this one on your radar.

In the meantime, Hotel Z stays open through the transformation, so the block doesn’t go dark while the work happens.

See you there!

Early 2027 is a while off, but this one reshapes a corner of the Gaslamp we all walk past. Sign up for updates now and watch it come together.
