September is when Temecula stops being a day trip you keep meaning to take and starts being the point. Harvest is on, nearly 50 wineries are pouring, and California Wine Month gives you four weekends’ worth of reasons to make the hour drive up the 15.

Here’s what earns the drive this year, and what to book before it sells out.

Five Tastings, More Than 30 Wineries, $79

The SIP Passport is still the cheapest way to taste your way across the valley, and it got cheaper. Two options right now: three tastings for $59, or five for $79, good at more than 30 wineries including Wilson Creek, Doffo, Leoness, and Miramonte. Buy it whenever, activate it whenever, then you have 90 days to use it.

One catch worth knowing before you buy. Passports are valid Monday to Friday only, and Labor Day is blacked out. That is less of a problem than it sounds. Midweek in wine country means shorter lines, more generous pours, and somebody behind the bar who has time to talk to you.

Fifty European Wines and One Saturday at Europa Village

The Great Taste of Europa has grown into a full weekend. The main festival lands Saturday, September 19 from 11 AM to 4 PM at Europa Village, pouring more than 50 wines from France, Italy, Spain, and, new this year, the UK.

There’s a beer and spirits garden, gourmet bites from the Europa Village kitchens, and live music running across all three villages: Bolero, C’est la Vie, and Vienza.

General admission presale is $179 and covers your pours, the food, a logo glass, and the entertainment. Designated drivers get in for $89. If you’d rather make a weekend of it, there’s a 12-course European dinner on Friday night and a brunch on Sunday.

Twenty-Four Years of Barefoot Stomping at Ponte

Ponte’s Grape Stomp turns 24 this year and the format hasn’t changed, because it doesn’t need to. Sunday, September 27, 4 PM to 9 PM: get in a barrel barefoot, race a partner to fill a bottle first, then eat. Appetizers at 4, buffet at 5 with braised short ribs and stuffed chicken, dessert at 6, dancing until 9.

Tickets are $160, or $144 if you’re in the wine club. It’s 21 and up, and groups of six or more get reserved seating, so round up your people before you book.

More Barrels to Get Into

Ponte gets the crowds, but it isn’t the only barrel in the valley. Stomps run nearly every September weekend, and a few of these earn the drive on their own.

Wilson Creek Winery – Saturday, September 12, 6 PM – 9:30 PM – $100, or $90.90 for club members. Harvest buffet, a drink ticket, a live band, and the stomp competition.

Bella Vista Winery – Saturday, September 19, 2 PM – 5 PM – $150 per two-person team with a bottle of sparkling included. Real oak barrels, a costume contest, and Lake Bella Vista behind you.

South Coast Winery – Saturday, September 26, 11 AM – 4 PM – free to attend, $50 per two-person team to stomp. It doubles as South Coast’s 25th anniversary, with tractor vineyard rides, line dancing, and live music until 4 PM.

Somerset Vineyard & Winery – Saturday, September 26, 1 PM – 5 PM – $285 per four-person team, a bottle each included. DJ, food trucks, an afterparty band, and spectators get in free. It sells out.

Wiens Cellars – Sunday, September 27, 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM – stomping from 2 PM, and you’ll need proof of a bottle purchase to get in a barrel. Caps off Wiens Western Weekend, which starts Friday.

Not every harvest party involves a barrel. Fazeli Cellars marks Mehregan, the Persian harvest celebration, on Friday, September 18 from 6 PM to 9 PM. Tickets run $25 for members, $35 if a member brings you, and $50 for everyone else.

Forty-Two Painted Barrels, No Ticket Required

The free thing to do between tastings: the Barrel Art Trail is back on September 1 with 42 hand-painted retired wine barrels scattered across the valley. Twenty-one are out in wine country, 13 are at hotels and businesses around town, and seven are in Old Town, including one at Rose Haven Heritage Garden for its 35th anniversary.

Five Courses and the Guy Who Made the Wine

If your version of wine country is less barefoot and more sit-down, Europa Village is doing Harvest & Heritage on Thursday, September 24 at 6:30 PM.

It opens with a western-inspired reception, live acoustic country, seasonal cocktails, and passed appetizers, then moves into five courses from Executive Chef Hany Ali: seared diver scallop, grilled peach and burrata, butter-poached halibut, prime beef tenderloin, and a harvest pear tarte tatin.

Head Winemaker Blake Miller walks the room through each pairing. It’s $120, or $108 for members, and it’s the only night this month you’ll get both of them at the same table.

Bring the Kids on the Nineteenth

Wine country isn’t only for the drinking half of the family. Peltzer opens its pumpkin farm for the season on Saturday, September 19, and it’s doubling as a 30/10 anniversary party: 30 years of the pumpkin farm, 10 years of the winery.

Pony rides, a petting farm, gem panning, carnival games, two live acts, and food vendors going until 9:30 PM. The giant pumpkin gets lit at 7:15. The farm stays open through Halloween, so this is the day fall officially starts up there.

Let Somebody Else Drive

Temecula is 60 minutes from San Diego, close enough to justify a Saturday and far enough that somebody has to stay sober. Grapeline started running a Waves to Wine tour out of Oceanside in May: Thursdays, $169 a person, three wineries, a vintner’s tour behind the scenes, a catered picnic lunch, and roundtrip transportation.
