Daffodil Café Brings Fresh Energy to La Jolla’s Daytime Dining Scene

La Jolla has a new spot that’s worth knowing about, especially if you work anywhere near the UTC area or just appreciate a café that puts real effort into what it serves.

Daffodil Café comes from Lauren Passero-Brookes, the same person behind Kensington Café and The Haven Pizzeria, so there’s already a track record here of knowing how to run a solid neighborhood spot.

Daffodil Cafe

More Than Just Another Café

What sets Daffodil apart is the intentionality behind it. The space itself – designed by Ana Svitak and Linda Skemp of Twice Studios and TecScape Design – feels like a deliberate escape from typical office park dining. Vivid colors, custom hand-drawn wallpaper, clean lines.

It’s cheerful without being cutesy, and the whole vibe is meant to give you a break from the workday grind.

Passero-Brookes put it well: “It’s a space where people can take a breath, gather with friends or coworkers, and savor food that makes them feel good.” That intention shows up in both the design and what’s coming out of the kitchen.

What You’ll Actually Want to Eat

Chef Sarah Palomares is leading the kitchen, and nearly everything is made from scratch with a seasonal approach. Breakfast includes solid staples like the Classic Breakfast Sandwich with farm-fresh eggs, cheddar, bacon, and herbed aioli on a fresh croissant, or Avocado Toast with heirloom tomato and lemon vinaigrette.

There’s a Belgian Waffle with berry compote and house-made whipped cream if you’re feeling indulgent, or lighter options like Acai bowls, Coconut Chia Pudding, and house-made Yogurt & Granola that change with what’s in season.

Lunch brings more variety – salads, sandwiches, and really appealing-sounding bowls. The Roasted Chicken Crunch Salad with kale, cabbage, apple, and goat cheese hits that sweet spot between healthy and satisfying.

The Veggie Sando layers sautéed zucchini, eggplant, and burrata, while the Chicken Tikka Masala Frankie wrapped in house-made naan adds a global touch.

Recent additions include the Commons Smash Burger – bacon, Hatch cheddar, caramelized onions, and herbed aioli with crispy fries – and a Roasted Veggie Farro Bowl with roasted cauliflower and carrots, warm kale, and house-made golden curry tahini dressing.

There are daily specials that rotate, so there’s reason to come back regularly.

Coffee comes from Talitha Coffee, a company that employs survivors of trafficking, which adds some meaning to your morning cup. They’ve also got local beer, cider, wine, fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, and weekend mimosas.

Catering and Beyond

If you’re planning an office lunch or private event, Daffodil handles catering with options like Breakfast Burrito Boxes, Salad Boxes (Caesar, Loaded Green, Chicken Crunch), and Sandwich Boxes with choices like Tuna Melt, Egg Salad, and Roasted Veggie.

They’ll do sides like house-made Hummus & Veggie, Cheese & Fruit, and Charcuterie. The space is available for private rental after hours too.

The café also functions as a bit of a lifestyle stop – you’ll find specialty culinary gifts, cookbooks, gourmet snacks, and bottles of wine or local craft beer if you want to grab something for later.

Why It Works

Daffodil isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. It’s focused on being a daytime neighborhood spot that serves good food in a pleasant environment.

With plans for happy hours, culinary pop-ups, and seasonal events, it’s positioning itself as more than just a lunch option – it’s becoming an actual community hub in an area that could use one.
