In the heart of La Jolla, a vibrant Cuban oasis has sprung to life, thanks to the determination and resilience of the Torres family. Havana Kitchen, the first and only Cuban eatery in the area, recently opened its doors to the public, marking the realization of a dream that almost seemed impossible several weeks ago.

A sweet, inspiring story

The story begins with James Torres, the owner of Havana Kitchen, whose passion for Cuban culture and cuisine inspired the expansion of his beloved family restaurant. With a successful flagship location in Old Town Temecula, James set his sights on bringing the flavors of Cuba to La Jolla and its neighboring communities. September 20th was a date circled on the Torres family calendar, a day that held the promise of a grand opening celebration.

But timing was not in his favor. Just days before his restaurant was set to open, James suddenly fell ill with acute appendicitis. Rushed into surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center, James encountered complications and has been hospitalized for more than two weeks.

But James was not alone in this. His young daughters, Sofia Torres, a recent USD graduate, and Alianna Torres, a current USD student, answered the call to help their Dad when he needed it most. The girls put everything on hold and along with their mom, James’ wife, Dianne Torres, an educator at San DIego Unified School District, persevered to make the grand opening of Havana Kitchen happen.

Working together they prepared, and readied the staff for the delayed soft opening to offer Havana Kitchen’s famed Cuban classics to the community.

“There’s nothing more important to my Dad than opening this second restaurant,” said Sofia Torres. “It represents everything our family has worked so hard to achieve. It’s a testament to every family who has come to America with a dream.”

In essence, the story of Havana Kitchen in La Jolla is a narrative of family, resilience, unwavering heart, and the enticing allure of Cuban cuisine.
