Oceanside’s Historic Yellow House Gets a Stunning New Life
The Victorian at Hill Street has opened as part of the new Hill Street Courtyard, transforming Oceanside’s beloved historic Wetzel House into something truly special.
This iconic yellow Queen Anne-style home, built in 1888 and located right on Coast Highway, has been reborn as a community-centered dining destination that honors both its rich past and Oceanside’s evolving culinary scene.
A Restaurant With Serious Local Roots
Led by Emily and David Rassel—the team behind South O’s Pour House and downtown’s Frankie’s—The Victorian at Hill Street now serves California cuisine that celebrates regional abundance.
Chef de Cuisine Lisa Rivera and culinary director Staci Miller have crafted shareable dishes like housemade laffa with tahini and pistou, heirloom tomato salad with Zamorano cheese, and vibrant roasted rainbow carrots designed to be passed around and savored.
The cocktail program comes from Ian Ward (known for Ponyboy and eight years at Addison) and his partner, Meagan Crumpley of The Spiritual Advisors.
Their ingredient-driven approach creates drinks like the citrusy Charlotte Brontë and the earthy Mrs. Oliphant—a matcha avocado horchata that perfectly captures the California coastal vibe.

Two Concepts, One Charming Courtyard
The space features both The Victorian restaurant and The Market at Hill Street, connected by a beautiful brick-clad central courtyard. The Market will bring back Staci Miller’s beloved rustic sandwiches, fresh salads, and grab-and-go favorites, including fine cheeses and wines perfect for home dinners or courtyard picnics.
Most seating at The Victorian is outdoors—either on the double-tiered heated wraparound porch or in the inviting brick courtyard. Inside, a cozy dining room and intimate bar provide a warm retreat when needed. The design preserves original architectural details while feeling refreshingly modern.
Community at the Heart
What makes this project especially meaningful is Emily Rassel’s personal connection—she spent her teenage years hanging out at the previous Hill Street Café.
The team has approached the renovation with deep commitment to inclusion and community support, partnering with nonprofits like TERI Inc. and Divine Path while supporting local artisans.
The timing couldn’t be better as the Coast Highway corridor continues developing into a creative culinary stretch with Bib Gourmand winners and natural wine bars. The Victorian and Market join a neighborhood in the midst of exciting transformation while preserving an important piece of Oceanside history.
