Westfield UTC Mall is San Diego’s Fast-Growing Foodie Hotspot

In addition to its ever-expanding shopping options, San Diego’s Westfield UTC Mall food scene has become quite the hotspot over the last few years, and it seems to have no plans to slow down.

It’s clear that people are coming to the mall to eat…not just shop. It’s not unusual to see lines out the door at many restaurants on weekday nights, and getting a table at Din Tai Fung can be a multi-hour experience.

With the introduction of several new food and beverage establishments this month, and several more on the way soon, Westfield UTC continues to raise the bar (we love bringing out-of-town visitors here for the inevitable “this is your mall?!” reaction!).

Westfield UTC food establishments

From authentic Japanese noodle shops and innovative sushi grills to Italian chocolate boutiques and gourmet burger joints, Westfield UTC can satisfy just about any craving.

Here are some of the new and anticipated openings we are most excited about:

Marugame Udon (opened April 2024)

A cult favorite noodle shop founded by one of Japan’s most recognized noodle experts, Marugame Udon serves up handcrafted Sanuki-style udon noodles and crispy tempura.

Made in-house daily in their theater-style kitchen, guests are invited to indulge in the artistry of authentic tradition of noodle making and savor the flavors centuries ago in the Kagawa Prefecture in the southern part of Japan.

Marugame Udon is located in the Macy’s Wing next to Qin West Noodle and Eureka.

Blue Ocean Sushi & Grill (opened early May)

Experience the ocean’s freshest flavors at Blue Ocean Sushi & Grill, now open at Westfield UTC adjacent to Macy’s. Helmed by Chef James Pyo, the UTC outpost features an exclusive menu that showcases a unique dining experience apart from its sister locations in Carlsbad and La Jolla.

While you can still enjoy Blue Ocean Sushi’s favorite rolls, a Chef’s Selection with items like an Omakase Box, as well as Tartare Harmony, will only be available at this location.

New recipe items available via the grill include Ribeye Teriyaki, Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass, Ishiyaki Hot Stone, Korean BBQ Short Rib, and Spicy Chicken Stir Fry.

Venchi (coming mid-June)

We fell in love with Venchi during our travels to Italy – and now we’ll have them right here in the mall! The first Cioccogelateria to debut in Southern California is gearing up to introduce Italian Allegria (joy and happiness) to San Diego foodies.

Venchi chocolates—all crafted in Italy—include the popular Chocoviar, Gianduiotti, Cremini, Pistachio, Hazelnut, and many others, all available in the upcoming boutique alongside curted Venchi Mix where patrons can mix and match their own assortment with more than 50 different chocolate varieties.

The gelato is made fresh daily (up to 20 flavors available) using only the finest genuine and natural ingredients, and crafted following traditional Italian recipes and can be enjoyed in a cup or gourmet cone or blended into a signature Gelatoshake.

Katsuya Ko (debuting this fall)

The revered Japanese eatery is bringing its famed dining experience into a new era with Katsuya Ko, commencing the expansion in Southern California at Westfield UTC.

Slated to open this fall, Katsuya Ko is delivering the next evolution of the brand, offering guests a unique, more laid-back experience that is created to accommodate all ages.

Ko, translating to child in Japanese,is the centerpiece of the project, as Katsuya Ko’s ethos is a vision of what Katsuya’s child would be—a youthful, warm and approachable version of Katsuya as customers know it now.

Building on the expansive specialty cocktails, unique rolls, and spectacular sushi and sashimi platters that Katsuya has been known for for decades, Katsuya Ko skillfully translates Japanese flavors into unexpected combinations that surprise and delight.

With Chef Katsuya Uechi at the helm of the new 3,000-square-foot eatery, expect shareable delights like miso cod bites, innovative creations such as the Ko burger and more.

Swagyu Burger

Founded by the renowned Chef Steve Brown, Swagyu Burger opened its Westfield UTC location Saturday, May 18.

As one of the select few certified by the Japanese Government to sell authentic Hyogo Kobe A5 Wagyu, Swagyu offers an unparalleled burger experience with signature Swagyu Burgers featuring a delectable blend of American, Australian and Certified Japanese A5 Wagyu, perfectly complemented by newschool American cheese.

They’ve made our list of the best burgers in San Diego two years in a row.

Win Wings

Coming soon, Win Wings is dedicated to serving high-quality cuisine, with every dish prepared fresh to order.

Founded by a native of Atlanta, GA, a city renowned for its passion for wings, WIN WINGS embraces this rich heritage by offering chicken wings and burgers that promise a delightful and authentic experience.

Mini Donut Company

Discover pure delight at the Mini Donut Company opening soon in Westfield UTC’s dining terrace. Indulge in freshly made donuts, crafted with passion and precision, offering both classic and unique flavors. Whether shopping, catching a movie or exploring the center, it’s the perfect stop for a sweet treat.

See you there!

Be sure to track down one of these new options on your next visit to Westfield UTC mall.

See you there, San Diego!
