tango-obsession

Complimentary wine, local garden taste & a bit of sweet!

Latin American music has been an “obsession” for Camarada for over 20 years! Tango Obsession evokes the intoxicating emotions of Argentina and features the music of the great Astor Piazzolla. Piazzolla performed in many of Buenos Aires’ finest tango bands of the 1940s, fusing classical, jazz, and tango into a distinctive, avant-garde musical idiom all his own.

Selections will include his most celebrated works, such as the rousing Triunfal, two intimate and lyrical ballads, Milonga del Angel and Soledad, and several other golden standards, like Escualo and Le Grand Tango — all music that borders on bursting with the smoldering energy of Piazzolla’s “Neuvo Tango!”

Concert-goers will also experience the magnetic pull of one of the most beautiful and famous tango pieces of all time, Volver, written by Carlos Gardel, the handsome singer/songwriter/composer/actor considered by many to embody the soul of the tango style.

They will recognize El Choclo, by Angelo Villodo. El Choclo premiered at an elegant Argentine restaurant in 1903 and has been adapted and recorded by an incredible number of artists, including Louie Armstrong, who did a version in 1955 called Kiss of Fire.

Also in 1955, Universal Studios gave Villodo’s melody a Flamenco work-over and used it in a classic melodrama starring the unlikely pair of Jack Palance and Barbara rush. The movie was called “Kiss of Fire.”

Tango Pour Madame was written by Tony Murena and André Verchuren, the latter being the most famous and best selling accordionist of his era, with 70 million records sold and 777 albums to his name. Despite his fame, Verchuren once said that, above all, making 17 million couples around the world dance was most important to him.

Mike Mower studied classical flute at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and was later awarded the ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music). He has since been involved in a very wide variety of musical projects, including live or recorded performances with jazz and rock artists such as Gil Evans, Tina Turner, Paul Weller, Björk, Ryuchi Sakamoto, and James Galway, for whom he produced a CD of his own compositions called “Tango Del Fuego.” Camarada is pleased to present this versatile composer’s Rumbango.

The Spanish pianist and composer Isaac Albéniz is known for his piano works based on Spanish folk music. His Tango sets a languid mood: one can easily envision rumpled bedsheets, morning light peeking in through gauzy curtains, traces of cigarette smoke illuminated in the air, and the contented smile of a lover…

Finally, Camarada’s always-scintillating resident tango dancers, Tango Alma, will be showcased throughout the program, heightening the evening’s passion for listeners and musicians alike!
